1 Kings 15:29 on God's rule over leaders?
What does 1 Kings 15:29 teach about God's sovereignty over kingdoms and leaders?

Setting the Scene

“ As soon as Baasha became king, he struck down the whole house of Jeroboam. He did not leave to Jeroboam anyone who breathed, until he had destroyed them, according to the word of the LORD that He had spoken through His servant Ahijah the Shilonite.” (1 Kings 15:29)

Jeroboam had rebelled against God. The prophet Ahijah had foretold complete judgment on his dynasty (1 Kings 14:7-16). When Baasha seized the throne, every detail unfolded exactly as God had announced.

God’s Word Fulfilled

• God’s prior prophecy (1 Kings 14:10-11) governs the outcome.

• Time lag between prophecy and fulfillment (roughly 24 years) shows God is never hurried, yet never late.

• Human power plays—Baasha’s coup—serve divine purposes, not the other way around (Isaiah 46:10-11).

Sovereignty over Leaders

• God raises rulers: “He changes the times and seasons; He removes kings and establishes them” (Daniel 2:21).

• God removes rulers: Jeroboam’s line erased, just as Saul’s earlier (1 Samuel 15:26-28).

• Even a violent usurper like Baasha cannot act outside God’s decree (Proverbs 21:1).

Sovereignty over Kingdoms

• The northern kingdom’s throne shifts by God’s design, reinforcing, “No one can restrain His hand” (Daniel 4:35).

• National stability or collapse rests on covenant faithfulness; God judges nations (Psalm 75:6-7).

• God’s reach is universal: “He determined their appointed times and the boundaries of their lands” (Acts 17:26).

Lessons for Today

• Trust the certainty of Scripture—what God says, He performs.

• Recognize that political events, however chaotic, unfold under heavenly authority (Romans 13:1).

• Understand God’s justice: unrepentant sin in leadership invites removal (Psalm 2:10-12).

• Live humbly and obediently, knowing the Lord alone grants authority and longevity.

How can we apply the consequences of disobedience today from 1 Kings 15:29?
