Andrew's initiative: trust God today?
How does Andrew's initiative in John 6:8 inspire us to trust God today?

Setting the Scene

John 6:8-9:

“One of His disciples, Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother, said to Him, ‘There is a little boy here who has five barley loaves and two small fish. But what are they for so many?’”

The crowd is huge, the need undeniable, and resources laughably small. Yet Andrew steps forward and places what little he sees into Jesus’ hands.

Andrew’s Quiet Initiative

• Andrew notices the boy’s lunch when others overlook it.

• He refuses to let the insignificance of the gift silence him.

• He brings the boy—and the need—directly to Jesus without delay.

• He admits, “But what are they for so many?” (v. 9), showing honest realism while still acting in faith.

What Andrew Teaches Us about Trust

• Trust starts with seeing possibilities, not just problems.

– Andrew spots potential where Philip only calculates cost (v. 7).

• Trust offers the small and ordinary to an extraordinary Savior.

2 Kings 4:2-7: a widow’s little oil multiplies when surrendered.

• Trust confesses insufficiency yet moves forward anyway.

Psalm 37:5: “Commit your way to the LORD; trust in Him, and He will do it”.

• Trust invites Jesus to author the outcome.

John 6:11: “Then Jesus took the loaves … and they had as much as they wanted”.

Scriptures that Echo Andrew’s Lesson

Judges 7:2-7 – Gideon’s 300 men prove God’s strength in weakness.

1 Samuel 17:40-50 – David’s five stones in God’s hand defeat Goliath.

Mark 12:41-44 – The widow’s two mites commend wholehearted trust.

Philippians 4:19 – “My God will supply all your needs …”.

Ephesians 3:20 – God “is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine”.

Practical Steps for Today

• Inventory the “five loaves and two fish” in your life—time, talents, finances, opportunities.

• Present them to Jesus daily, believing He multiplies surrendered resources.

• Resist the paralysis of comparison; what seems tiny to you is ample in His hands.

• Speak up and step out: faith often looks like bringing the little you have into the light.

• Expect overflow: God’s provision not only meets needs but leaves baskets of testimony (John 6:13).

Living the Lesson

Andrew’s brief, humble action still echoes through history. By placing limited resources into limitless hands, he shows that trust is not grand rhetoric but simple obedience. The same Savior stands ready today. Bring Him what you have—and watch Him feed multitudes.

In what ways can we apply Andrew's example of service in our lives?
