Apply 1 Cor 14:6 to today's church?
How can we apply 1 Corinthians 14:6 to modern church practices and teachings?

Anchoring in the Text

“Now, brothers, if I come to you speaking in tongues, what profit will I be to you unless I bring some revelation or knowledge or prophecy or teaching?” (1 Corinthians 14:6)

Principle: Edification Before Exhibition

• Ministry that can be understood is ministry that can build up.

• Spiritual gifts are measured by their benefit to the body, not by their novelty.

• Supporting verses:

1 Corinthians 14:12 “…seek to excel in gifts that build up the church.”

1 Corinthians 14:19 “But in the church, I would rather speak five coherent words to instruct others than ten thousand words in a tongue.”

Shaping the Worship Service

• Use clear language; provide translation where needed.

• Select songs rich in scriptural truth so the congregation “gets” what it sings (Colossians 3:16).

• Incorporate testimonies, readings, and exhortations that convey revelation, knowledge, prophecy, or teaching—never filler.

• Keep freighted symbolism explained, never assumed.

Guidelines for Preachers and Teachers

• Arrive prepared: revelation (fresh insight from the text), knowledge (sound doctrine), prophecy (Spirit-prompted application), teaching (structured explanation).

• Outline sermons so hearers can follow the logic (2 Timothy 4:2).

• Illustrate, but always tether illustrations back to the passage.

• Invite feedback to confirm that truth landed clearly.

Practicing the Gifts

• Tongues: encourage private use (1 Corinthians 14:2) and public use only with interpretation (14:27-28).

• Prophecy: test by Scripture (1 Thessalonians 5:21) and ensure it points to Christ and edifies.

• Discernment: appoint mature believers to weigh what is shared (14:29).

Evaluating All Ministries

Ask of every program, class, or outreach:

• Does it bring revelation—unveiling more of God’s character?

• Does it impart knowledge—grounding believers in doctrine?

• Does it deliver prophecy—Spirit-led application to current life?

• Does it offer teaching—systematic instruction that sticks?

If not, revise or retire it.

Healthy Metrics for Leaders

• Growth in holiness and love within the flock (Ephesians 4:11-12).

• Increasing biblical literacy—people quote Scripture because they know it.

• Expanding ministry participation—equipped saints serve, not spectate.

Personal Application for Every Believer

• Come to church eager to give as well as receive (14:26).

• When you share, aim for clarity and benefit, not impressiveness.

• Study Scripture daily so you can contribute revelation, knowledge, prophecy, or teaching in small groups, conversations, and family devotions.
