Apply Abraham's bold prayer today?
How can we apply Abraham's example of boldness in prayer to our lives?

Setting the Scene

“Then Abraham said, ‘Now that I have ventured to speak to the Lord, suppose twenty are found there?’ He replied, ‘For the sake of twenty, I will not destroy it.’” (Genesis 18:31)

Abraham is standing before the Creator of the universe, yet he keeps stepping forward—respectfully, humbly, but boldly. He is fully convinced God hears, cares, and responds. That conviction fuels every request he makes for Sodom.

What Drove Abraham’s Boldness?

• Confidence in God’s character—He knows the Judge of all the earth “will do right” (v. 25).

• Personal relationship—Abraham has already walked with God, heard promises, seen miracles. Relationship births courage.

• Concern for others—His nephew Lot and countless strangers are in danger. Love compels bold intercession.

• Persistence—He asks six times, moving from fifty down to ten. Each answer emboldens the next request.

Lessons for Our Prayer Life

• Boldness is anchored in who God is, not who we are. Hebrews 4:16: “Therefore let us approach the throne of grace with confidence…”

• God welcomes repeated requests. Jesus Himself said, “keep asking… keep seeking… keep knocking” (Matthew 7:7).

• Intercession is an act of love. 1 Timothy 2:1 urges “petitions, prayers, intercessions” for all people.

• Humility and boldness can (and should) coexist. Abraham says, “Now that I have ventured…” acknowledging his smallness while still speaking up.

Practical Steps to Pray Boldly Today

1. Begin with God’s revealed character.

– Open Scripture first, let His holiness, mercy, and faithfulness ignite faith.

2. Name the promise that matches the need.

Jeremiah 33:3: “Call to Me and I will answer…”

3. Ask specifically. Abraham names numbers; specificity clarifies faith.

4. Persist respectfully. Return to the throne as many times as the burden remains.

5. Include others’ needs before your own; bold love expands beyond personal concerns.

6. Anticipate God’s answer, whether it’s mercy, guidance, or a refining “no.” Boldness trusts His decision.

Encouragement from Other Passages

James 5:16: “The prayer of a righteous man is powerful and effective.”

Ephesians 3:12: “In Him and through faith in Him we may enter God’s presence with boldness and confidence.”

Psalm 62:8: “Trust in Him at all times… pour out your hearts before Him.”

Living it Out

Keep stepping forward like Abraham. Each time God answers—even with silence that teaches waiting—let it fuel the next courageous request. Our boldness in prayer is not presumption; it’s the rightful privilege of children who know their Father always does what is right and delights to show mercy.
