Apply Barnabas & Saul today?
How can we apply the example of Barnabas and Saul in our ministries today?

Barnabas and Saul: Prophets and Teachers Serving Together

“In the church at Antioch there were prophets and teachers: Barnabas, Simeon called Niger, Lucius of Cyrene, Manaen … and Saul.” (Acts 13:1)

Recognize and Develop God-given Gifts

• God lists Barnabas and Saul among “prophets and teachers.” Spiritual gifts are specific and real.

1 Corinthians 12:4-7: “There are different gifts, but the same Spirit … Now to each one the manifestation of the Spirit is given for the common good.”

Ephesians 4:11-12 ties those gifts to equipping the saints.

Practical step: identify gifts in yourself and in others, then provide training, mentoring, and opportunities to exercise them.

Serve Faithfully Before Stepping Out

• Before missionary journeys, Barnabas and Saul labored quietly in Antioch (cf. Acts 11:25-26).

Luke 16:10: “Whoever is faithful in very little will also be faithful in much.”

Practical step: excel in present assignments; fruitfulness there becomes the springboard for broader ministry.

Embrace a Team of Diverse Backgrounds

• The Antioch leadership list shows ethnic and social variety.

• Diversity reflects heaven’s makeup (Revelation 7:9) and sharpens ministry (Proverbs 27:17).

Practical step: invite, train, and platform believers of different ages, cultures, and experiences.

Cultivate an Atmosphere of Worship, Fasting, and Prayer

Acts 13:2: “While they were worshiping the Lord and fasting, the Holy Spirit said, ‘Set apart for Me Barnabas and Saul …’”

Practical step: schedule corporate worship and fasting; expect God to give clear direction in such settings.

Listen and Obey the Holy Spirit

• The call came from the Spirit, not personal ambition.

Galatians 5:25: “Since we live by the Spirit, let us walk in step with the Spirit.”

Practical step: hold plans loosely, ready to pivot when the Spirit impresses a new assignment.

Send and Support as Well as Go

• Antioch laid hands on Barnabas and Saul and released them (Acts 13:3).

Romans 10:15: “How can they preach unless they are sent?”

Practical step: budget, pray for, and maintain communication with those the church sends; celebrate sending as much as staying.

Model Humility and Mutual Submission

• Barnabas first mentors Saul (Acts 9:27; 11:22-26); later Saul (Paul) often takes the lead.

Matthew 20:26-28: greatness equals servanthood.

Practical step: yield positional prominence when God elevates another’s gift; cheer each other on.

Commit to Ongoing Discipleship

• After journeys, Paul and Barnabas return to strengthen disciples (Acts 14:21-23).

2 Timothy 2:2: “What you have heard from me … entrust to faithful men who will be qualified to teach others also.”

Practical step: build reproducible systems—teach, model, delegate, and empower new leaders.

Live Generously and Encouragingly

• “Barnabas” means “Son of Encouragement” (Acts 4:36).

Hebrews 10:24-25: “Let us consider how to spur one another on toward love and good deeds.”

Practical step: speak life-giving words, share resources, and be the first to believe in emerging servants of God.

Summary Application

Recognize gifts, serve faithfully, foster diverse teams, prioritize worship and fasting, heed the Spirit, champion a sending culture, walk in humility, disciple intentionally, and encourage continually—just as Barnabas and Saul modeled from Antioch onward.

What role does fasting and prayer play in decision-making according to Acts 13:1?
