Apply Josiah's reverence today?
How can we apply Josiah's reverence for God's word in our lives?

Setting the Scene

• Judah’s young king Josiah finds the long-lost Book of the Law (2 Kings 22).

• Shocked by the gap between Scripture and practice, he launches a nationwide reform.

• On his tour of former idolatrous sites he notices an old tomb:

“So he said, ‘What is this monument I see?’ And the men of the city answered, ‘It is the tomb of the man of God who came from Judah and proclaimed these things you have done against the altar at Bethel.’ ” (2 Kings 23:17)

• Josiah pauses, honors the prophet’s memory, and protects the grave—another sign of deep respect for every word God had spoken.

Josiah’s Reverence in Action

• He listens: the moment Scripture is read, he pays attention (22:10–11).

• He humbles himself: “he tore his clothes” (22:11).

• He seeks clarity: sends messengers to the prophetess Huldah for God’s perspective (22:13).

• He commits publicly: “made a covenant before the LORD” (23:3).

• He acts decisively: removes idols, destroys altars, and even pauses to preserve a prophet’s tomb (23:4–20).

Why the Tomb Matters

Josiah understood that God’s warnings, though spoken generations earlier, remained alive and binding. Guarding the tomb affirmed:

• God’s word is trustworthy across time.

• Every prophecy will stand until fulfilled (Isaiah 40:8).

• Respect for the messenger reflects respect for the Sender (Luke 10:16).

Connecting Scriptures

Deuteronomy 17:18-19 – a king must write and read the Law daily.

Psalm 119:97 – “How I love Your law! All day long it is my meditation.”

Joshua 1:8 – constant, obedient meditation brings success.

James 1:22 – hearing without doing deceives us.

Applying Josiah’s Example Today

Honor the Word mentally

• Read it daily—slowly enough to notice details.

• Approach every passage expecting it to speak with full authority.

Honor the Word emotionally

• Let conviction cut; don’t explain it away.

• Cultivate godly sorrow that leads to change (2 Corinthians 7:10).

Honor the Word volitionally

• Translate discovery into action the same day.

• Remove idols—habits, media, relationships—that compete with loyalty to Christ (1 John 5:21).

Honor the Word communally

• Share insights with family, small group, church.

• Encourage collective obedience, just as Josiah gathered “all the people” (23:2).

Practical Steps for This Week

1. Copy a short passage by hand; writing reinforces memory (Deuteronomy 17:18).

2. Identify one “altar” that needs tearing down—maybe a streaming subscription, a grudge, or a spending pattern. Dismantle it.

3. Visit a Christian cemetery or read a missionary biography to remember those who stood for truth, as Josiah honored the unnamed prophet.

4. Replace the removed idol with a positive practice: Scripture memorization, worship music, service.

Encouragement to Continue

Josiah’s story shows that heartfelt reverence for God’s word can revive an entire nation. The same Spirit stands ready to revive homes, churches, and hearts today—one obedient reader at a time.
