Apply Paul's suffering example today?
How can we apply Paul's example of suffering for the church in our lives?

Opening Scripture

“Now I rejoice in my sufferings for you, and I fill up in my flesh what is lacking in regard to Christ’s afflictions, for the sake of His body, which is the church.” (Colossians 1:24)

Paul’s Perspective in One Sentence

Suffering can be embraced—joyfully—when it advances the well-being and maturity of Christ’s people.

Suffering as Part of Our Call

Philippians 1:29: “For it has been granted to you on behalf of Christ not only to believe in Him, but also to suffer for Him.”

Acts 14:22: “Through many tribulations we must enter the kingdom of God.”

Romans 8:17: “If we are children, then we are heirs—heirs of God and co-heirs with Christ, if indeed we suffer with Him, so that we may also be glorified with Him.”

These passages confirm that suffering is not an accident; it is woven into the believer’s path, designed by God for eternal good.

Why Paul Could Rejoice in Pain

1. Purpose: His trials directly benefited others (“for you”).

2. Participation: They joined him to the ongoing “afflictions of Christ,” aligning him with the Savior’s heart.

3. Perspective: He saw the church as Christ’s own body; any aid to her was an honor.

4. Promise: Future glory outweighed present pain (cf. 2 Corinthians 4:17).

Practical Ways to Follow Paul’s Pattern

• Stand with persecuted believers—support ministries, write letters, give financially (Hebrews 13:3).

• Accept ridicule for biblical convictions at work or school without retaliation (1 Peter 4:14).

• Serve sacrificially in the local church—late nights, early mornings, unseen tasks.

• Endure relational strain to preserve unity; choose forgiveness over self-protection (Ephesians 4:2–3).

• Prioritize gospel proclamation even when it costs comfort, time, or reputation (2 Timothy 2:10).

Encouragement from Other Scriptures

2 Corinthians 1:5–7—our shared sufferings produce shared comfort.

1 Peter 4:12–13—fiery trials are reasons to rejoice, proving we belong to Christ.

James 1:2–4—testing cultivates perseverance and maturity.

Checking Our Heart Attitude

Ask: Am I motivated by love for Christ’s body, or by a desire to look heroic? 1 Corinthians 13:3 warns that even dramatic sacrifice is hollow without love.

Looking to the Ultimate Reward

2 Timothy 4:8 promises the crown of righteousness for those who finish faithfully.

Revelation 21:4 assures that every tear will be wiped away.

Knowing the end strengthens us to embrace present trials—just as Paul did—for the good of Christ’s church and the glory of our coming King.

In what ways can we contribute to the 'body of Christ' today?
