Apply Psalm 135:15 to value God first?
How can we apply Psalm 135:15 to prioritize God over worldly possessions?

Setting the Verse Before Us

“The idols of the nations are silver and gold, made by the hands of men.” – Psalm 135:15

Seeing Idolatry for What It Is

• Idols are anything “made by the hands of men” that capture the allegiance, affection, or trust that rightfully belongs to God.

• Silver and gold symbolize wealth, status, and security in earthly resources.

• Because Scripture is true and literal, the warning is direct: when possessions become ultimate, they become idols (cf. Exodus 20:3–4; Colossians 3:5).

Why Idols Can’t Satisfy

• They are man-made and lifeless (Psalm 135:16–17).

• They cannot love, provide, or rescue (Jeremiah 10:5).

• Those who trust them “will become like them” – spiritually dull and powerless (Psalm 135:18).

Practical Ways to Prioritize God Over Possessions

1. Inventory Your Heart

– List what you own and ask, “Would losing this shake my joy in Christ?”

– Pray Psalm 139:23–24 for God to expose hidden attachments.

2. Redirect Your Treasures

– “Where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.” – Matthew 6:21

– Move funds from mere accumulation to kingdom purposes (missions, mercy ministries, local church).

3. Practice Rhythms of Contentment

– Daily thank God for basic provisions (1 Timothy 6:8).

– Limit impulse purchases; wait 24 hours and seek God’s peace before buying.

4. Choose Simplicity Over Show

– Adopt lifestyle standards that free time and money for eternal investments (Hebrews 13:5).

– Regularly declutter; give away quality items to those in need (Acts 20:35).

5. Sabbath From Spending

– Set aside one day each week with no buying or browsing.

– Use the time to worship, serve, or enjoy creation without cost, reminding your soul that God is enough.

6. Testify Publicly

– Share stories of God’s provision when you release resources (Psalm 66:16).

– Encourage others to trust God, not riches (1 Timothy 6:17–19).

Scriptures to Keep Front and Center

Proverbs 30:8–9 – “Give me neither poverty nor riches… lest I be full and deny You.”

Matthew 6:24 – “You cannot serve God and money.”

Luke 12:15 – “One’s life does not consist in the abundance of possessions.”

Philippians 4:11–13 – Contentment in every circumstance through Christ.

Living the Difference

Idols of silver and gold promise control yet deliver chains. By continually relocating our trust, treasure, and time to the Lord, we dethrone possessions and enthrone the God who alone is worthy.

Connect Psalm 135:15 with Exodus 20:3-4 on the prohibition of idolatry.
