How can we apply Jesus' example of rest in our busy lives? The Pause at the Well “Since Jacob’s well was there, Jesus, wearied from His journey, sat down by the well. It was about the sixth hour.” (John 4:6) Jesus—fully God, yet fully man—lets us see His honest fatigue. No symbolism, no allegory: He was tired and He rested. That single sentence sets the tone for a lifestyle His followers can imitate. Why Jesus’ Rest Matters for Us • Demonstrates true humanity: He embraced legitimate physical limits. • Models obedience to the created order: even the Son honors rhythms the Father built into life (Genesis 2:2–3). • Shows ministry balance: rest prepared Him to engage the Samaritan woman moments later, leading to a village-wide awakening. Rest as a God-Given Rhythm • Exodus 20:9–10 – A day set apart by command, not suggestion. • Mark 6:31 – “Come away by yourselves to a secluded place and rest a while.” Ministry crowds did not override this invitation. • Psalm 127:2 – “He gives His beloved sleep.” Rest is a gift, not a guilt trip. • Hebrews 4:9–10 – A future, eternal rest anchors today’s practice. Practicing “Well-Side” Moments in a Busy Culture 1. Schedule stops, not pauses “if time allows.” Jesus chose to sit—He didn’t merely slow His pace. 2. Guard the sixth-hour margin: identify the time of day you’re naturally drained and protect it for quiet. 3. Step away from noise: replace constant notifications with brief solitude (Luke 5:16). 4. Pair rest with refreshment in the Word; Jesus’ physical pause led to a spiritual conversation. 5. Keep rest purposeful, not escapist. Like Jesus, be ready to re-engage renewed. Rest That Renews Spirit, Soul, and Body • Physical – Adequate sleep, nourishing meals, moderate exercise honor the body God created (1 Corinthians 6:19–20). • Spiritual – Still moments for prayer, Scripture meditation, worship. • Relational – Unhurried fellowship; Jesus lingered in conversation at the well. • Mental – Creative hobbies, nature walks, silence detox the mind. Common Obstacles and Biblical Counters • False productivity gospel – Luke 10:41-42 declares sitting at Jesus’ feet “the better part.” • Fear of missing out – Matthew 6:32-33 calls us to prioritize the Kingdom; God handles the rest. • Prideful independence – Psalm 23:2 reminds us He “makes” us lie down when we won’t choose to. Living From Rest, Not Just Working Toward It When we adopt Jesus’ pattern, rest becomes the context in which work flourishes, not the reward for collapsing afterward. Sitting by our own “well” today readies us to stand strong tomorrow—just as the Savior turned a moment of fatigue into a fountain of living water for others. |
