Applying Mark 9:28 to our lives?
How can we apply the disciples' learning experience in Mark 9:28 to our lives?

Setting the Scene

“After Jesus had gone into the house, His disciples asked Him privately, ‘Why couldn’t we drive it out?’” (Mark 9:28)

A Teachable Moment

The disciples had already cast out demons (Mark 6:13), yet this time they failed. Instead of pretending nothing was wrong, they pulled Jesus aside and asked for insight. Their humility opened the door to deeper understanding, and Jesus responded, “This kind cannot come out, except by prayer” (Mark 9:29).

Key Lessons for Our Walk

• Humble inquiry

– Admit when something isn’t working and seek the Lord’s explanation.

– “God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble” (James 4:6).

• Ongoing dependence on Christ

– Past victories don’t guarantee present power. We need fresh reliance on Jesus every time.

– “Apart from Me you can do nothing” (John 15:5).

• The centrality of prayer (and fasting)

– Some challenges can only be met through earnest, sustained prayer.

– “Pray without ceasing” (1 Thessalonians 5:17).

• Private time with Jesus

– Breakthrough understanding often comes away from the crowds.

– Jesus Himself “often withdrew to lonely places and prayed” (Luke 5:16).

• Recognizing spiritual realities

– The disciples faced a demon stronger than their routine methods. We, too, confront unseen forces (Ephesians 6:12) and must engage with spiritual weapons.

Putting It into Practice Today

1. Pause and ask: Where am I hitting a wall? Bring that specific struggle to Christ.

2. Schedule intentional, unhurried moments alone with Him—no distractions.

3. Commit to consistent prayer, adding fasting as the Spirit leads.

4. Record insights from Scripture and prayer; apply them immediately.

5. Rely on His strength daily, not yesterday’s successes.

Encouraging Scriptures to Remember

• “If any of you lacks wisdom, he should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to him.” (James 1:5)

• “Trust in the LORD with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding.” (Proverbs 3:5)

• “I can do all things through Christ who gives me strength.” (Philippians 4:13)

By adopting the disciples’ posture—honest questions, humble hearts, and prayerful dependence—we position ourselves to receive the power and insight God delights to give.

How does Mark 9:28 connect with Ephesians 6:18 about prayer and perseverance?
