Applying atonement daily: how?
How can we apply the principle of atonement in our daily lives today?

A permanent statute, a present reality

“ ‘This is to be a permanent statute for you, to make atonement for the Israelites once a year because of all their sins.’ ” (Leviticus 16:34)

Once-a-year foreshadowing, once-for-all fulfillment

• The annual Day of Atonement drew a clear line between holy God and sinful people.

Hebrews 9:12 explains the fulfillment: “He entered the Most Holy Place once for all, not by the blood of goats and calves but by His own blood, having obtained eternal redemption.”

• The shadow met its substance in Jesus, “the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world” (John 1:29).

Receiving atonement daily

• Rest in Christ’s finished work rather than personal effort (Romans 3:25).

• Walk in the light; continual cleansing flows from His blood (1 John 1:7).

• Reject condemnation; the price is fully paid (Romans 8:1).

• Keep short accounts with God through honest confession (Psalm 32:5).

• Approach the Father with confident access purchased by the Son (Hebrews 10:19-22).

Opening every moment to holy living

• Humble submission resembles Israel “afflicting their souls” on the tenth day (Leviticus 16:29); cultivate daily repentance.

• Gratitude fuels obedience; love answers love (Ephesians 5:2).

• Set boundaries that guard purity, mirroring the sanctuary’s separation (1 Peter 1:15-16).

• Celebrate communion often, visibly remembering the blood and body that secured atonement (1 Corinthians 11:26).

Extending the power of atonement outward

• Forgive others as freely as God forgave you in Christ (Ephesians 4:32).

• Reconcile broken relationships, serving as “ministers of reconciliation” (2 Corinthians 5:18-19).

• Speak the gospel so neighbors see the way their sins can be covered.

• Practice mercy toward the vulnerable; the cross birthed a people zealous for good works (Titus 2:14).

Living in freedom

• Each sunrise becomes a reminder that sin’s debt is settled.

• Joy replaces fear; worship overflows naturally.

• Hope anchors the soul, knowing the same blood that saved also keeps and will finally present you blameless (Jude 24-25).

How does Leviticus 16:34 connect to Christ's ultimate sacrifice for our sins?
