How can we discern and avoid misguided zeal in our own spiritual journey? Acts 9:2 and the Picture of Misguided Zeal “and requested letters to the synagogues in Damascus, so that if he found any men or women belonging to the Way, he could bring them as prisoners to Jerusalem.” Saul’s Example: Passion without Light • Saul was sincere, energetic, and convinced he served God. • His zeal, however, targeted the very people God had redeemed. • The problem was not lack of passion but lack of true knowledge (see Romans 10:2). Why Misguided Zeal Still Happens Today • Ignoring clear Scripture in favor of tradition or emotion. • Defending personal agendas and labeling them “biblical.” • Confusing forcefulness with faithfulness (James 1:20). Five Scriptural Guardrails for Discernment 1. Test every impulse against the whole counsel of God’s Word (Acts 17:11). 2. Let love lead; zeal that violates love is already off-course (1 Corinthians 13:2). 3. Watch the fruit: genuine zeal produces the Spirit’s character (Galatians 5:22-23). 4. Seek godly counsel and mutual accountability (Proverbs 11:14). 5. Submit ambitions to Christ’s lordship daily (Luke 9:23). Spotting Warning Signs in Ourselves • Growing harshness toward fellow believers. • Delight in debate more than delight in Christ. • Neglect of prayer, patience, and humility. • Quickness to label others while excusing personal sin. Practical Steps to Stay on Course • Saturate the mind with Scripture before taking action (Psalm 119:11). • Invite trusted believers to speak truth into motives and methods. • Slow down; zeal in a hurry often outruns grace (Proverbs 19:2). • Celebrate the Lord’s victories in others instead of only your own (Philippians 2:3-4). • Regularly rehearse the gospel, remembering you are saved by mercy, not effort (Titus 3:5). Encouragement from Saul’s Transformation • Zeal surrendered to Christ became the engine of Paul’s missionary journeys (Acts 20:24). • God can redirect passion, turning persecutors into proclaimers. • Our call is not to dampen zeal but to anchor it in truth, love, and the Spirit’s power. |
