How should believers respond when they feel the need to hide from God? The First Hide-and-Seek: Genesis 3:8 “Then the man and his wife heard the sound of the LORD God walking in the garden in the cool of the day, and they hid themselves from the presence of the LORD God among the trees of the garden.” Why Do We Still Hide? • Guilt—we know we’ve crossed a line (Romans 3:23). • Shame—we’re afraid of being seen for who we really are (Genesis 3:10). • Fear of consequences—we assume judgment will outweigh mercy (Matthew 25:24-25). • Pride—we’d rather manage the problem ourselves than admit need (Proverbs 16:18). Remember Who God Is • All-knowing—nothing surprises Him (Hebrews 4:13). • Ever-present—we literally can’t outrun Him (Psalm 139:7-10). • Loving Father—He moves toward sinners, not away (Luke 15:20). • Faithful to forgive—He has already provided the remedy (1 John 1:9). The Futility of Hiding • Adam and Eve’s fig leaves did not erase guilt (Genesis 3:7). • Jonah fled to Tarshish but God met him on the sea (Jonah 1:3-4). • David’s silence only intensified inner turmoil (Psalm 32:3-4). Trying to conceal sin or hurt is like covering a lamp with a blanket—the darkness remains while the fire smolders underneath. God’s Invitation to Come Out of Hiding • “Where are you?”—a question meant to draw, not condemn (Genesis 3:9). • “Come now, let us reason together… though your sins are scarlet, they shall be as white as snow” (Isaiah 1:18). • “Draw near to God, and He will draw near to you” (James 4:8). He seeks us first; our response is simply to step into the light He already provides. Practical Steps to Step into the Light 1. Acknowledge the impulse to hide—name the fear or shame. 2. Confess honestly to God—use plain words; He knows them already (Psalm 32:5; 1 John 1:9). 3. Receive His forgiveness—take Him at His word instead of your feelings (Psalm 103:12). 4. Invite accountability—a trusted believer can help guard against slipping back into secrecy (Galatians 6:2). 5. Replace hiding with pursuit—regular prayer, Scripture intake, and fellowship shift the heart from avoidance to affection (Colossians 3:16). Promises to Hold Onto When You Feel Like Hiding • “He who conceals his transgressions will not prosper, but whoever confesses and renounces them will find mercy.” (Proverbs 28:13) • “The LORD is near to the brokenhearted and saves the crushed in spirit.” (Psalm 34:18) • “There is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.” (Romans 8:1) • “If we walk in the light as He is in the light… the blood of Jesus His Son cleanses us from all sin.” (1 John 1:7) When the urge to hide surfaces, remember Eden’s echo: God is already calling your name, ready to cover you with His own righteousness instead of your hastily stitched fig leaves. Step toward Him; you will always find grace waiting. |
