Bible stories: God's power in simple ways?
What other Bible stories show God's power in small or simple ways?

Setting the Scene: An “Easy Thing” for the Lord

“ ‘This is an easy thing in the sight of the LORD; He will also deliver the Moabites into your hand.’ ” (2 Kings 3:18)

Jehoshaphat and the kings of Israel and Edom face a waterless desert, yet the Lord promises not only hidden streams but victory over Moab. The verse reminds us that God delights in wielding simple, unnoticed, or “small” means to accomplish mighty purposes.

Echoes of Divine Power in Simple Means

• Gideon’s 300 Men – Judges 7:2–7

“ ‘You have too many men for Me to deliver Midian into their hand…’ ” (v. 2).

A clay jar, a torch, and a trumpet replace swords, so the victory is unmistakably God’s.

• David’s Sling and Stone – 1 Samuel 17:40–50

“David put his hand in the bag, took out a stone, and slung it…” (v. 49).

One smooth stone fells a giant, displaying the sufficiency of faith over brute force.

• The Widow’s Oil – 2 Kings 4:1–7

“ ‘Do not borrow just a few. Then go in and shut the door…’ ” (vv. 3–4).

A tiny flask becomes an oil factory, paying debts and preserving a family line.

• Naaman’s Seven Dips – 2 Kings 5:10–14

“ ‘Go, wash yourself seven times in the Jordan…’ ” (v. 10).

A muddy river, rejected at first, turns an incurable leper into a worshiper of Israel’s God.

• A Borrowed Axe Head – 2 Kings 6:5–7

“The iron floated.” (v. 6).

Lost tools matter to God; floating metal testifies that no detail is too small for Him.

• Elijah’s Still, Small Voice – 1 Kings 19:11–12

“After the fire came a gentle whisper.” (v. 12).

God bypasses wind, earthquake, and fire to speak in a hush, proving power isn’t always loud.

• Samson’s Donkey Jawbone – Judges 15:14–16

“With a donkey’s jawbone I have slain a thousand men.” (v. 16).

The weakest weapon in the strongest hand reveals the real strength is the Spirit of the Lord.

• A Little Cloud over Carmel – 1 Kings 18:41–45

“I see a cloud like a man’s hand rising from the sea.” (v. 44).

From a palm-sized vapor comes a deluge that ends a three-year drought.

• Five Loaves and Two Fish – John 6:5–13

“Here is a boy with five barley loaves and two small fish, but what are they among so many?” (v. 9).

In Jesus’ hands, a lunch feeds thousands with baskets left over, underscoring divine sufficiency.

• Water into Wine – John 2:1–11

“Fill the jars with water.” (v. 7).

Ordinary wash-water quietly becomes premium wine, introducing the Messiah’s transforming touch.

• A Mustard Seed of Faith – Matthew 17:20

“If you have faith as small as a mustard seed…nothing will be impossible for you.”

Even microscopic trust plugs into limitless power.

Why These Stories Matter Today

• They magnify God, not the instrument.

• They calm our anxiety: nothing is “too little” for Him.

• They invite us to offer whatever we have—time, talent, resources—and watch Him multiply it.

God’s track record is clear. From hidden streams in the desert to lunch-box miracles beside Galilee, He loves to turn small things into showcases of His glory.

How can we trust God with our challenges, as shown in 2 Kings 3:18?
