Biblical examples of God's response to idols?
What other biblical examples show God's response to idolatry like in 2 Chronicles 34:5?

Context of Josiah’s Purge

2 Chronicles 34:5 shows Josiah “burned the bones of the priests on their altars, and so he purified Judah and Jerusalem.” God’s holiness demanded drastic action; the idolatrous altars had to be erased, even desecrated, so true worship could be restored.

Earlier Warnings in the Wilderness

• Golden Calf (Exodus 32)

– “He took the calf they had made, burned it in the fire, ground it to powder, scattered it on the water, and made the Israelites drink it.” (v. 20)

– “And the LORD sent a plague on the people because of what they had done with the calf.” (v. 35)

God confronted idolatry immediately: the idol was destroyed, the guilty were disciplined, and thousands died.

• Baal of Peor (Numbers 25:1-9)

– Phinehas thrust his spear, “Then the plague on the Israelites was halted, but those who died in the plague numbered 24,000.” (vv. 8-9)

Passionate, decisive judgment stopped the outbreak of sin and wrath.

Prophets and Kings Who Confronted Idolatry

• Gideon (Judges 6:25-32)

– God told him to “tear down your father’s altar to Baal.” When Gideon obeyed, the townspeople demanded his death, yet God protected him, showing His approval of the demolition.

• Elijah on Mount Carmel (1 Kings 18:39-40)

– After fire fell, “Elijah said… ‘Seize the prophets of Baal.’ …and he slaughtered them there.” Idolatry met swift elimination, and the people confessed, “The LORD, He is God!”

• The Man of God vs. Jeroboam’s Altar (1 Kings 13:3-5)

– “The altar will be split apart and the ashes upon it will be poured out.” The sign came instantly; even the king’s hand withered when he tried to seize the prophet.

• Jehu’s Purge (2 Kings 10:18-28)

– “They smashed the pillar of Baal, tore down the temple of Baal, and made it a latrine… So Jehu eradicated Baal from Israel.” Idolatry was publicly shamed and permanently removed.

National Judgment for Persistent Idolatry

• Fall of the Northern Kingdom (2 Kings 17:7-18)

– “So the LORD was very angry with Israel and removed them from His presence.” Exile was God’s final response after centuries of ignored warnings.

• Fall of Judah (2 Chronicles 36:16-17)

– They “mocked God’s messengers… until the wrath of the LORD rose against His people… He brought up against them the king of the Chaldeans.” Even the covenant nation faced destruction when idols persisted.

What These Accounts Reveal About God’s Heart

• Idolatry provokes righteous anger; God moves quickly or gradually—but always decisively—against it.

• He often raises bold leaders (Moses, Phinehas, Gideon, Elijah, Jehu, Josiah) who act courageously to cleanse the land.

• When leaders and people refuse to repent, God’s judgment escalates to plagues, defeat, or exile.

• His goal is purification and restoration of wholehearted worship, underscoring the command, “You shall have no other gods before Me.”
