What challenges might "many oppose" present to fulfilling God's work today? The open door—and the resistance it attracts “For a wide door for effective service has opened to me, and there are many who oppose.” — 1 Corinthians 16:9 Paul describes a moment when God clearly provides opportunity, yet opposition rises just as clearly. The same pattern repeats today: whenever God’s people step through an open door, resistance follows close behind. How “many oppose” shows up in our day • Cultural pushback: biblical convictions labeled intolerant or outdated (John 15:18–19). • Legal or policy constraints that restrict public witness, worship, or compassion ministries (Acts 4:18–20). • Social isolation and ridicule in schools, workplaces, and media (1 Peter 4:4). • Family pressure when loved ones reject or resent a believer’s changed priorities (Matthew 10:34–36). • Internal division stirred up by false teaching or quarreling (Acts 20:29–30; 2 Timothy 4:3). • Physical persecution in many parts of the world (2 Timothy 3:12). The unseen battle behind visible opposition “For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this world’s darkness, and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms.” — Ephesians 6:12 • Satan resists any advance of the gospel (1 Thessalonians 2:18). • Darkness hates the light because light exposes it (John 3:19–20). • Spiritual warfare intensifies whenever the kingdom spreads (Revelation 12:12). Practical effects on fulfilling God’s work • Discouragement—workers grow weary and lose heart (Galatians 6:9). • Distraction—energy diverted to defend rather than proclaim (Nehemiah 4:7–9). • Delays—permits, visas, or resources withheld. • Distortion—truth watered down to avoid conflict (Galatians 1:10). • Division—teams fracture under pressure (Philippians 4:2–3). Strength for the struggle • Expect it: “Indeed, all who desire to live godly lives in Christ Jesus will be persecuted.” — 2 Timothy 3:12 • Rejoice in it: “Rejoice as you share in the sufferings of Christ, so that you may be overjoyed at the revelation of His glory.” — 1 Peter 4:13 • Stand firm: “Be strong in the Lord and in His mighty power.” — Ephesians 6:10 • Remember the outcome: “If God is for us, who can be against us?” — Romans 8:31 • Keep moving: “We must go through many tribulations to enter the kingdom of God.” — Acts 14:22 • Hold the promise: “In the world you will have tribulation. But take courage; I have overcome the world!” — John 16:33 When “many oppose,” the opposition itself confirms the value of the work. God still opens wide doors; He also grants courage, unity, and perseverance to step through them until the task is finished. |
