Christian response to opposition?
How should Christians respond to opposition, as seen in Matthew 26:4?

Opposition in Matthew 26:4

“and they conspired together to arrest Jesus covertly and kill Him.” (Matthew 26:4)

The religious elite plot in secret, motivated by fear and hatred. Their method—stealth and violence—highlights the darkness Christ faced.

Jesus Remains Unshaken

• Jesus knows their plan (v.2) yet presses on to the cross.

• He stays in Jerusalem, teaches openly, and celebrates Passover—no panic, no retreat.

• His calm confidence fulfills Isaiah 53:7: “He was oppressed and afflicted, yet He opened not His mouth.”

Principles for Our Response

1 • Expect opposition.

2 Timothy 3:12: “all who desire to live a godly life in Christ Jesus will be persecuted.”

2 • Stand firm without fear.

Philippians 1:28: “not being frightened in any way by your opponents.”

3 • Reject retaliation.

Romans 12:19: “Do not avenge yourselves, beloved, but leave room for God’s wrath.”

4 • Choose love.

Matthew 5:44: “Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you.”

5 • Trust God’s sovereignty.

Acts 4:27-28 shows the same conspiracy ultimately fulfilled God’s plan.

Living It Out Today

• Speak truth graciously; silence or compromise is not Christ-like courage.

• Pray for wisdom (James 1:5) to discern when to stay and when to flee (Matthew 10:23).

• Keep serving; opposition is not permission to quit.

• Maintain integrity—no secret deals, no shady tactics.

• Encourage one another (Hebrews 10:24-25); spiritual family strengthens resolve.

Why This Matters

Opposition is a backdrop for God’s greater purposes. As Jesus’ calm obedience turned conspiracy into redemption, our steadfast, loving response turns hostility into a stage for the gospel’s power.
