Contrast Matt 22:5 & Prov 1:24-25 on neglect.
Compare Matthew 22:5 with Proverbs 1:24-25 on ignoring divine invitations.

Setting the Scene

God’s invitations are never casual suggestions; they are loving summonses that carry eternal weight. Two passages paint this truth vividly—Jesus’ parable of the wedding banquet (Matthew 22) and Wisdom’s cry in Proverbs 1.

The Parable’s Snub – Matthew 22:5

“But they paid no attention and went away, one to his field, another to his business.”

• A royal wedding feast is ready.

• The guests have everything to gain, nothing to lose.

• Yet routine—fields, businesses—seems more pressing than the king’s call.

Wisdom’s Rejected Call – Proverbs 1:24-25

“Because you refused my call, and no one took my outstretched hand”.

Verse 25 adds that the hearers spurned counsel and correction.

• The speaker is Wisdom—an unmistakable personification of God’s own voice (cf. 1 Corinthians 1:24).

• Like the king in the parable, God stretches out His hand, but it is slapped away.

Shared Themes of Neglect

• Same divine initiative: an invitation rooted in grace (Isaiah 55:1).

• Same human response: indifference (Hebrews 2:3, “how shall we escape if we neglect…”).

• Same misplaced priorities: everyday concerns eclipse eternal realities (Luke 14:18-20).

Consequences of Disregard

• Separation: unworthy invitees lose their seats at the banquet (Matthew 22:8-13).

• Calamity: Wisdom warns of distress and terror when ignored (Proverbs 1:26-27).

• Finality: there is a point when the door shuts (Genesis 7:16; Matthew 25:10-12).

Personal Application Today

• God’s Word still calls—through Scripture, faithful preaching, and the Spirit’s prompting.

• Ordinary life can anesthetize the soul; plowing a field or scrolling a screen can drown out eternity.

• Accepting the invitation means repentance and faith in Christ (John 1:12).

• Delayed obedience is disobedience; “Now is the fitting time…now is the day of salvation” (2 Corinthians 6:2).

Living Responsively

• Cultivate sensitivity: daily seek the Spirit’s whisper before the world’s clamor.

• Prioritize worship and fellowship: they remind the heart of the banquet’s joy (Hebrews 10:25).

• Share the invitation: servants still go to the highways and byways (Matthew 22:9).

• Walk in wisdom: cherish counsel, embrace correction, and keep your lamps burning (Proverbs 3:5-6; Luke 12:35-36).

How can we prioritize God's call over 'fields' and 'business' in our lives?
