Daniel 7:21: Good vs. Evil struggle?
How does Daniel 7:21 illustrate the struggle between good and evil forces?

Setting the Scene

Daniel receives a nighttime vision filled with symbolic beasts, horns, and heavenly courts. Each image represents literal future kingdoms and rulers, culminating in a final tyrannical power opposed to God and His people.

Key Verse

Daniel 7:21: “As I watched, this horn was waging war against the saints and prevailing against them.”

Imagery of Daniel 7:21

• “The horn” – a literal final world ruler, hostile toward God, rising out of the fourth beast (vv. 7–8).

• “Waging war” – continuous, determined aggression, not a one-time skirmish.

• “Prevailing” – for a season the evil power actually seems to win; God allows a temporary triumph of darkness to fulfill His purposes.

Identifying the Characters

• The horn = the Antichrist figure, energized by Satan (cf. 2 Thessalonians 2:3-4; Revelation 13:5-7).

• The saints = the faithful people of God on earth during that period.

• The Ancient of Days (v. 22) = the Lord Himself, who will decisively intervene.

The Nature of the Conflict

1. Spiritual at its core but played out in visible history (Ephesians 6:12).

2. Persistent persecution of believers—legal, social, and violent (Matthew 24:9).

3. A limited defeat that tests and refines the saints’ faith (1 Peter 1:6-7).

4. A clash permitted by God’s sovereignty, never outside His control (Job 1:12).

Theological Insights

• Scripture presents good and evil as real forces, not abstract concepts (Genesis 3:15; 1 John 3:8).

• God allows evil a measured season to expose its nature and magnify His justice (Romans 9:22-23).

• Temporary setbacks for the saints are part of divine timing, not divine weakness (Revelation 6:9-11).

Parallels Elsewhere in Scripture

Revelation 13:7 – “The beast was permitted to wage war against the saints and to conquer them.”

Revelation 12:17 – Dragon pursues the “offspring” who keep God’s commands.

Psalm 2 – Earthly rulers rage, yet the Lord laughs in heaven.

John 16:33 – “In the world you will have tribulation. But take heart; I have overcome the world.”

Application for Today

• Expect hostility when living faithfully; opposition confirms the reality of the conflict.

• Take courage: any apparent victory of evil is temporary and strictly bounded by God’s decree.

• Stand firm in truth and holiness, knowing the final verdict belongs to the Ancient of Days.

• Strengthen one another; persecution is endured best in committed community (Hebrews 10:24-25).

Certain Victory

Daniel’s vision does not end in verse 21. The very next words announce, “until the Ancient of Days came and pronounced judgment in favor of the saints of the Most High” (v. 22). Evil’s moment is fleeting; God’s kingdom is forever.
