Ensure godly leadership today?
How can we ensure godly leadership to avoid similar consequences today?

The Crisis in Lamentations 5:8

“Slaves rule over us; there is no one to deliver us from their hands.”

• Judah’s collapse left unqualified, oppressive rulers in charge.

• This verse is the lament of a nation suffering because covenant-faithful leadership was abandoned.

• The lesson is timeless: ungodly leaders bring bondage, while righteous leaders bring blessing.

Principles for Godly Leadership Today

• Leadership flows from worship. When people drift from God, He may allow inferior rulers (Judges 2:11-15).

• “When the righteous flourish, the people rejoice, but when the wicked rule, people groan.” (Proverbs 29:2)

• Therefore, ensuring godly leadership begins with pursuing personal and corporate holiness.

Cultivating Leaders with Biblical Qualifications

Refer to 1 Timothy 3:1-13; Titus 1:5-9; Exodus 18:21.

1. Character first

– Above reproach, faithful in marriage, self-controlled, hospitable, “able men who fear God, trustworthy and hate bribes.”

2. Competence rooted in truth

– “Able to teach” (1 Timothy 3:2) and “hold firmly to the trustworthy word” (Titus 1:9).

3. Christlike servanthood

– “Whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant.” (Matthew 20:26)

Creating Structures of Accountability

• Plurality of elders/deacons prevents one person from drifting (Philippians 1:1).

• Regular evaluation by Scripture, not popularity (Hebrews 4:12).

• Transparent stewardship of resources (2 Corinthians 8:20-21).

Empowering Families and Congregations

• Godly leadership rises out of healthy homes (Deuteronomy 6:6-9).

• Parents train children to honor authority, preparing future leaders (Ephesians 6:4).

• Congregations affirm leaders only when qualifications are visible; laying on hands hastily brings harm (1 Timothy 5:22).

Living as Salt and Light in the Public Square

• Pray “for kings and all in authority…” (1 Timothy 2:1-4).

• Vote and speak with biblical convictions (Proverbs 31:8-9).

• Demonstrate integrity at work and community, showing the pattern Titus 2:7-8 commends.

A Final Encouragement

God responded to Judah’s cries by ultimately restoring them; He will honor those today who seek leaders that fear Him. “Righteousness exalts a nation, but sin is a disgrace to any people.” (Proverbs 14:34) Pursue righteousness personally, promote it corporately, and trust the Lord to raise up shepherds after His own heart (Jeremiah 3:15).
