Ensuring humble leadership, avoiding Uzziah?
How can we ensure humility in leadership roles, avoiding Uzziah's mistakes?

The Tragic Turning Point of a Good King

Uzziah began so well—seeking God, winning battles, strengthening Judah. Yet the moment success swelled his heart, pride cracked the foundation of his leadership.

Reading 2 Chronicles 26:21

“King Uzziah had leprosy until the day he died, and he lived in a separate house—leprous and excluded from the house of the LORD. And his son Jotham had charge of the palace and governed the people of the land.”

What Went Wrong: Identifying Uzziah’s Missteps

• Ignored clear boundaries God had set for kings (26:16).

• Usurped priestly duties, presuming spiritual authority not given.

• Resisted correction from faithful priests (26:17-19).

• Failed to repent once disciplined—his leprosy never turned his heart.

Timeless Principles for Humble Leadership

• Recognize every victory, gift, and position as grace, not entitlement.

• Remember that roles differ in the body; overstepping invites judgment.

• Invite accountability; welcome faithful wounds rather than flattering lips.

• Keep worship pure—service should flow from obedience, not self-promotion.

• Accept God’s discipline quickly; repentance restores fellowship.

Practical Safeguards for Today’s Leaders

• Start each decision with open Scripture, letting God’s word set the agenda.

• Surround yourself with teammates who can say “No” without fear.

• Schedule regular, private self-examination before the Lord (Psalm 139:23-24).

• Publicly credit God and others for successes; privately own failures.

• Limit privileges that feed ego—simple living guards a servant heart.

• Keep serving in unnoticed tasks; scrub tables as readily as signing policies.

• Celebrate others’ achievements, actively promoting their growth.

Keeping the Cross in View

Leadership that endures stays tethered to Calvary. Watching the Son of God stoop to wash feet and bear sin cures pride at the root. Fixing our eyes there, we lead from gratitude, depend on grace, and finish well where Uzziah stumbled.

In what ways can pride lead to downfall in our personal lives today?
