Exodus 17:10: Trust God's plan in trials?
How does Exodus 17:10 encourage us to trust God's plan during difficult times?

Setting the Scene

“So Joshua did as Moses had told him, and fought the Amalekites, while Moses, Aaron, and Hur went up to the top of the hill.” (Exodus 17:10)

The people of Israel were fresh out of Egypt, still learning what it meant to follow the LORD in the wilderness. Suddenly, the Amalekites attacked. In response, God laid out an unexpected plan: Joshua would battle in the valley while Moses, supported by Aaron and Hur, would raise the staff of God on a hill.

God’s Strategy on Display

• Unlikely Division of Labor

– Joshua and the soldiers fought a physical battle.

– Moses, Aaron, and Hur fought a spiritual battle of intercession.

• Visible Symbol of Dependence

– The raised staff reminded Israel—and the enemy—that victory came from the LORD, not military strength (cf. Psalm 20:7).

• Team Effort Under God’s Direction

– Even Moses needed help; Aaron and Hur steadied his hands. Trusting God’s plan often involves relying on others He provides.

Lessons for Our Difficult Days

• God Sees the Whole Picture

– Israel could only see swords and desert sand; God saw a bigger narrative of deliverance and covenant (Isaiah 55:8-9).

• Obedience Over Explanation

– Joshua didn’t demand to understand why a raised staff mattered. He simply “did as Moses had told him.” Trust grows as we obey, even when details are unclear (Proverbs 3:5-6).

• Spiritual Battles Require Spiritual Posture

– Moses’ uplifted hands model persevering prayer. Our crises invite us to lift needs to heaven while working faithfully on earth (Ephesians 6:18).

• God Provides Support Systems

– Aaron and Hur illustrate that God rarely asks us to stand alone. Christian community is part of His plan for endurance (Hebrews 10:24-25).

• Victory Is the LORD’s

– Israel’s triumph was not credited to strategy or stamina but to God’s power released through obedient faith (Romans 8:31).

Supporting Scriptures

2 Chronicles 20:15: “Do not be afraid or discouraged… for the battle is not yours, but God’s.”

Romans 8:28: “We know that God works all things together for the good of those who love Him…”

Psalm 46:1-2: “God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in times of trouble. Therefore we will not fear…”

Putting It into Practice

• Identify your “valley” battle and your “hilltop” posture: Fight the tasks before you while keeping your heart lifted in prayer.

• Invite trustworthy believers to stand with you, just as Aaron and Hur stood with Moses.

• Keep visible reminders of God’s past faithfulness—Scripture verses, testimonies, or symbols—to steady your faith when circumstances shake.

• Regularly recount how God has turned past struggles into victories; let those stories fuel present trust (Deuteronomy 4:9).
