Exodus 6:30: Trust God's strength, not self.
What does Exodus 6:30 teach about relying on God's strength over our abilities?

Setting the Scene

Exodus 6 ends with Moses standing before the LORD, aware that he is about to confront the most powerful ruler on earth. God has just reiterated His covenant promises, yet Moses responds:

“‘But Moses replied in the LORD’s presence, “Since I am unskilled in speech, why would Pharaoh listen to me?”’ (Exodus 6:30)

Moses’ Honest Assessment of Himself

• “Unskilled in speech” reveals Moses’ sense of inadequacy.

• He sees the magnitude of Pharaoh’s power and the apparent smallness of his own gifting.

• His question—“Why would Pharaoh listen to me?”—shows he is measuring success by personal ability rather than divine commissioning.

God’s Sovereign Response

• God immediately answers in Exodus 7:1–2, declaring, “See, I have made you like God to Pharaoh.”

• The LORD shifts the focus from Moses’ weakness to God’s authority working through him.

• Divine power will be displayed precisely through human limitation so that the outcome unmistakably glorifies God (cf. 2 Corinthians 4:7).

Lessons on Relying on God’s Strength

1. Weakness is an invitation, not a disqualification

– God often selects the unlikely: “God chose the foolish things of the world to shame the wise” (1 Corinthians 1:27–29).

2. Ability is supplied, not assumed

– Moses lacks eloquence; God supplies words.

– Gideon lacks courage; God supplies assurance (Judges 6:14–16).

– Believers today lack sufficiency; “our competence comes from God” (2 Corinthians 3:5).

3. Obedience activates divine power

– When Moses obeys, plagues, signs, and wonders follow.

– God’s strength is experienced on the other side of obedience.

4. The outcome belongs to the LORD

– “The battle belongs to the LORD” (1 Samuel 17:47).

– Success is measured by faithfulness, not self-confidence.

Connecting Scriptures

Isaiah 41:10 — “Do not fear, for I am with you… I will strengthen you.”

Philippians 4:13 — “I can do all things through Christ who gives me strength.”

2 Corinthians 12:9 — “My grace is sufficient for you, for My power is perfected in weakness.”

Putting It into Practice Today

• Admit areas where you feel “unskilled.”

• Recall God’s promises that His presence, not your talent, secures victory.

• Step forward in obedience, trusting Him to supply what you lack.

• Give glory to God when results exceed your capability, pointing others to the Source of true strength.
