Finding God's purpose in surprises?
How can we discern God's purpose in unexpected situations, like Caiaphas in John 11:49?

Setting the Scene in John 11:49

“ But one of them, named Caiaphas, who was high priest that year, said to them, ‘You know nothing at all!’ ” (John 11:49)

Caiaphas and the council are furious over Jesus’ growing influence.

Caiaphas, focused on political survival, blurts out a statement meant to justify eliminating Jesus.

God, however, turns that statement into a prophecy of redemptive purpose (see John 11:50-51).

Caiaphas: An Unwitting Prophet

“ He did not say this on his own, but as high priest that year he prophesied that Jesus would die for the nation.” (John 11:51)

God can use even resistant or unaware people to declare His plan (compare Numbers 22:28-30; Isaiah 10:5-7).

The high priest’s office carried an authority God honored, despite the man’s motives.

Caiaphas thought politically; God spoke prophetically, revealing the cross as the means of salvation for Israel and “the scattered children of God” (John 11:52).

Principles for Reading Divine Purpose in the Unexpected

• God’s sovereignty overrules human intentions

– “A man’s heart plans his course, but the LORD determines his steps.” (Proverbs 16:9)

– “They did what Your power and will had decided beforehand would happen.” (Acts 4:27-28)

• God weaves good out of evil choices

– “As for you, what you intended against me for evil, God intended for good.” (Genesis 50:20)

– “We know that God works all things together for the good of those who love Him.” (Romans 8:28)

• God’s purposes stand, even when hidden

– “I declare the end from the beginning… My purpose will stand.” (Isaiah 46:10)

– “How unsearchable His judgments, and untraceable His ways!” (Romans 11:33)

Steps for Personal Discernment Today

1. Stay saturated in Scripture

• God’s revealed Word is the primary lens for interpreting events.

2. Trust, don’t panic

• “Trust in the LORD with all your heart… He will make your paths straight.” (Proverbs 3:5-6)

3. Ask for wisdom

• “If any of you lacks wisdom, he should ask God… and it will be given to him.” (James 1:5)

4. Look for the bigger story

• God may be advancing His gospel, refining character, or positioning you for service.

5. Watch for providential threads

• Conversations, timing, open or closed doors often reveal His hand.

6. Evaluate motives

• Are decisions driven by fear like Caiaphas, or by faith in God’s plan?

7. Move forward in obedience

• Understanding deepens as you act on what you already know to be right.

Encouragement for the Journey

When circumstances feel chaotic or antagonistic, remember Caiaphas. Even a hostile decree became a highway for redemption. The same sovereign Lord is orchestrating today’s surprises, turning them toward His glory and the good of His people.
