Godly vs. worldly advice discernment?
How can we discern godly counsel from worldly advice in our lives?

Setting the Scene

2 Samuel 16:23 — “Now in those days the advice Ahithophel gave was like one who inquires of God. That was the same for David and for Absalom.”

Ahithophel’s counsel sounded divine, yet later God Himself overturned it (2 Samuel 17:14). The contrast teaches us to test every voice we hear.

Why Appearances Can Mislead

• Human reputation can be impressive, yet motives and loyalties shift.

• An insight that seems flawless today may be rooted in pride or rebellion tomorrow (James 3:14–16).

• Even counsel that once helped us (David) can be weaponized by someone else (Absalom).

Biblical Markers of Godly Counsel

1. Grounded in Scripture

• “Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path” (Psalm 119:105).

• Counsel that contradicts clear teaching—even subtly—must be rejected.

2. Centered on Christ’s Lordship

• “Whatever you do…do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus” (Colossians 3:17).

• Advice that exalts self, money, or power over obedience to Christ is worldly.

3. Confirmed by the Spirit’s Fruit

• “The fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace…” (Galatians 5:22–23).

• Godly counsel produces peace and holiness, not envy, strife, or fear.

4. Proven by God-fearing Character

• “Walk with the wise and you will become wise” (Proverbs 13:20).

• Consider the life, humility, and integrity of the one giving advice.

5. Tested in Prayerful Dependence

• “In all your ways acknowledge Him, and He will make your paths straight” (Proverbs 3:6).

• Bring counsel before God, asking for clarity; He delights to guide.

6. Harmonized with the Counsel of Many

• “In an abundance of counselors there is safety” (Proverbs 11:14).

• Seek corroboration from multiple mature believers, not just one impressive voice.

Red Flags of Worldly Advice

• Appeals to immediate gratification or revenge (2 Samuel 17:1–4).

• Requires moral compromise, even in “small” ways (Psalm 1:1).

• Relies on human cleverness rather than God’s providence (Isaiah 31:1).

• Ignores eternal consequences, focusing only on temporal gain (Mark 8:36).

Steps for Everyday Discernment

• Compare every suggestion to Scripture—write out relevant verses.

• Evaluate the counselor’s track record of faithfulness.

• Observe the inner witness of peace or unrest from the Spirit (Colossians 3:15).

• Look for alignment with the priorities of God’s kingdom: righteousness, mercy, humility (Micah 6:8).

• Wait patiently when unsure; godly counsel endures time-testing, worldly pressure rushes you.

Encouraging Outcome

When David chose Hushai’s God-directed strategy over Ahithophel’s brilliance, the Lord preserved the throne and fulfilled His purposes (2 Samuel 17:14). Likewise, discerning and following godly counsel safeguards our walk and advances God’s glory in our lives.
