Handling opposition to Jesus' teachings?
How should we respond to opposition when following Jesus' teachings?

The setting in Mark 11:18

“When the chief priests and scribes heard this, they began looking for a way to kill Him; for they feared Him, because the whole crowd was astonished at His teaching.” (Mark 11:18)

• Jesus cleansed the temple and taught with unmistakable authority.

• Religious leaders felt threatened, so they plotted violence.

• Opposition arose precisely because truth was proclaimed and embraced by the people.

Why opposition arises

• Truth exposes darkness—“Everyone who does evil hates the Light” (John 3:19-20).

• Christ’s followers disturb worldly systems of power and self-interest.

• Scripture promises it: “Indeed, all who desire to live godly lives in Christ Jesus will be persecuted.” (2 Timothy 3:12)

Our calling when opposition comes

• Fix our eyes on Jesus—“Consider Him who endured such hostility … so that you will not grow weary.” (Hebrews 12:2-3)

• Follow His pattern—“He did not retaliate … but entrusted Himself to Him who judges justly.” (1 Peter 2:21-23)

• Rejoice in kingdom perspective—“Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness’ sake, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.” (Matthew 5:10-12)

• Overcome evil with good—“Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.” (Romans 12:21)

Practical responses to hostility

• Stay mission-focused—keep teaching and living the gospel regardless of threats.

• Maintain integrity—no compromise, no deceit, no vengeance.

• Speak truth in love—firm words, gracious tone.

• Pray continually—draw strength and boldness as the early church did (Acts 4:29).

• Wear spiritual armor—remember the battle’s true arena (Ephesians 6:12; 2 Corinthians 10:4).

• Stand together—solidarity in the body encourages perseverance (Philippians 1:27-29).

Encouragement from other passages

Daniel 3—Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego face the fire yet emerge unharmed.

Acts 5:40-42—apostles rejoice after flogging, “never stopping” their teaching.

2 Timothy 4:17—Paul, deserted by men, strengthened by the Lord to keep preaching.

The same God who sustained them remains faithful today.

Living it out today

Expect resistance whenever the gospel confronts sin, yet remember: opposition confirms you are on the same path your Lord walked. Keep proclaiming truth, respond with Christ-like grace, trust God’s just verdict, and let steadfast love silence every threat.
