How can we genuinely honor God's messengers without hypocrisy? Setting the Scene “Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You build tombs for the prophets and decorate the monuments of the righteous.” (Matthew 23:29) Jesus is exposing a showy respect that stopped short of obedience. The religious leaders beautified the graves of murdered prophets yet rejected the very message those prophets preached. Their tribute looked impressive, but their hearts were unchanged. The Heart Problem: Hollow Honor • They admired the past while resisting the present call to repentance (vv. 30-31). • They praised righteous men yet walked in the same sin that killed those men. • Their “honor” substituted ceremony for surrender—memorials instead of obedience. Principles for Genuine Honor Listen and Obey • “Blessed rather are those who hear the word of God and keep it.” (Luke 11:28) • Honor begins with accepting the messenger’s God-given message and acting on it (James 1:22). Esteem the Work • “Acknowledge those who work diligently among you… and esteem them very highly in love because of their work.” (1 Thessalonians 5:12-13) • Speak appreciation, write a note, offer practical help—concrete expressions, not empty flattery. Provide Material Support • “The elders who lead effectively are worthy of double honor, especially those who work hard at preaching and teaching.” (1 Timothy 5:17) • Fair wages, hospitality, and resources free them to focus on the ministry God assigned. Imitate Godly Example • “Remember your leaders who spoke the word of God to you. Consider the outcome of their way of life and imitate their faith.” (Hebrews 13:7) • Study how they pray, serve, and endure hardship, then pattern your own walk accordingly. Protect Their Joy • “Obey your leaders and submit to them… Allow them to do this with joy, not grief.” (Hebrews 13:17) • Encourage more than you critique. Resolve conflicts quickly. A joyful shepherd blesses the whole flock. Pray Continually • Paul repeatedly asked, “Brothers, pray for us.” (e.g., 1 Thessalonians 5:25) • Intercede for wisdom, purity, courage, and protection from the enemy. Hold to the Word • The Bereans were “examining the Scriptures daily to see if these teachings were true.” (Acts 17:11) • Honor never means blind acceptance. Test every sermon against Scripture to guard both yourself and the messenger. Guardrails against Hypocrisy • Resist personality cults—exalt Christ, not the celebrity. • Reject selective obedience—apply the whole counsel of God, not just agreeable parts. • Confess when convicted—quick repentance keeps honor sincere. • Remember human frailty—leaders need grace just as they dispense it. • Stay Word-centered—Scripture, not opinion, defines success. Living It Out Today 1. Start each week by reading the upcoming sermon text; arrive ready to obey. 2. Schedule a tangible act of support—child-care, meal, or financial gift. 3. Send an encouraging message highlighting one way the leader’s life spurred spiritual growth in you. 4. Pray through their public calendar, asking God to empower every teaching moment. 5. When correction comes, thank God for love that warns, then change course without delay. By replacing mere admiration with responsive obedience, practical support, and humble accountability, we honor God’s messengers—and in so doing, we honor the God who sent them. |
