How can Balaam's words boost our faith?
In what ways can we apply Balaam's declaration to strengthen our faith journey?

Setting the Scene

“Then Balaam lifted up an oracle, saying: ‘Arise, O Balak, and hear; give ear to me, O son of Zippor!’” (Numbers 23:18)

Balaam is compelled to speak exactly what God puts in his mouth (vv. 12, 26). His opening words—“Arise… and hear”—carry timeless weight. They invite us to rise from passivity and listen to the God who always speaks truth (v. 19).

Key Phrase: “Arise… and Hear”

• Arise: a summons to action, readiness, and reverence

• Hear: an urgent call to attentive, obedient listening

Together, the words shape a two-step rhythm for every believer: wake up spiritually, then lean in to God’s unchanging Word.

Application 1: Rise from Spiritual Apathy

• Shake off complacency (Romans 13:11–12)

• Set hearts “on things above” (Colossians 3:1)

• Pray Psalm 119:37—“Turn my eyes from worthless things”

When we “arise,” we deliberately choose alertness instead of sluggish faith.

Application 2: Give Full Attention to God’s Voice

• Faith comes by hearing the Word (Romans 10:17)

• Mary “sat at the Lord’s feet, listening” (Luke 10:39)

• Commit to daily Scripture intake—reading, memorizing, meditating

Balaam’s imperative, “Give ear,” reminds us that growth hinges on active, expectant listening.

Application 3: Trust in the Immutable Character of God

Immediately after the command to listen, Balaam declares, “God is not a man, that He should lie” (Numbers 23:19).

• Anchor hope in God’s reliability (Titus 1:2)

• Refuse fear; stand on promises that cannot fail (Isaiah 55:11)

• Recite Hebrews 6:18 when doubts arise—“It is impossible for God to lie.”

Confidence in God’s truthfulness fortifies our walk.

Application 4: Respond in Obedient Action

James 1:22—“Be doers of the word, and not hearers only.”

• Israel was blessed when they obeyed; Balak’s plans crumbled because he ignored God’s message.

• Plan concrete steps: reconcile a relationship, share the gospel, serve in the local church.

Hearing without doing leads to paralysis; hearing plus doing yields growth.

Application 5: Speak Truth with Courage

Balaam risked royal wrath by declaring only what God said.

Ephesians 4:15—“Speak the truth in love.”

Acts 4:19–20—Peter and John refuse silence before hostile authorities.

• Ask God for boldness to uphold biblical truth in conversations, workplaces, and civic life.

Our testimony gains power when rooted in unwavering allegiance to Scripture.

Putting It All Together

Balaam’s ancient declaration outlines a simple yet profound pathway:

1. Rise up—reject apathy.

2. Listen—drink deeply of God’s Word.

3. Trust—rest in His unfailing character.

4. Obey—translate hearing into action.

5. Declare—speak truth fearlessly.

Follow this pattern and watch your faith journey grow steadier, stronger, and more vibrant day by day.

How should Balaam's proclamation influence our trust in God's word today?
