How can Christians protect their land?
How can Christians ensure they do not "defile the land" in their communities?

Opening the Text

“So you are not to defile the land where you are. For bloodshed defiles the land, and atonement for the land cannot be made for the blood that is shed in it, except by the blood of the one who shed it. Do not defile the land where you live and where I dwell, for I the LORD dwell among the Israelites.” (Numbers 35:33-34)

What “defile the land” means

• In the immediate context, the sin is innocent blood—murder left unpunished.

• Throughout Scripture, defilement also comes through:

– Sexual immorality (Leviticus 18:24-28)

– Idolatry (Jeremiah 3:9)

– Social injustice and oppression (Isaiah 1:15-17)

• The land belongs to the Lord; when His moral order is violated, the ground itself is considered polluted (Psalm 106:38).

Why this still matters

• God remains the ultimate Landlord (Psalm 24:1).

• He expects His people to reflect His holiness wherever they live (1 Peter 1:15-16).

• A community’s moral health invites either God’s blessing or discipline (Proverbs 14:34).

Practical ways believers guard their communities

1. Value every human life

• Reject violence, murder, and abortion; defend the vulnerable (Proverbs 24:11-12).

• Support just laws that punish wrongdoing fairly (Romans 13:3-4).

2. Walk in sexual purity

• Honor marriage as God defines it (Hebrews 13:4).

• Flee all forms of sexual immorality (1 Corinthians 6:18-20).

3. Refuse idolatry

• Keep Christ pre-eminent over money, entertainment, and politics (Matthew 6:24).

• Cultivate regular worship, Bible intake, and fellowship (Acts 2:42).

4. Practice justice and mercy

• Advocate for the poor, the foreigner, and the oppressed (Micah 6:8).

• Conduct business with honesty; pay fair wages (James 5:4-5).

5. Steward creation wisely

• Treat land, water, and wildlife as entrusted resources, not disposable toys (Genesis 2:15).

• Avoid extremes: neither exploiting nor worshiping nature.

6. Live repentantly and intercede

• Confess personal and corporate sins (1 John 1:9; Daniel 9:3-5).

• Pray for revival and for leaders to pursue righteousness (1 Timothy 2:1-2).

7. Proclaim the gospel

• Only Christ’s atoning blood ultimately cleanses defilement (Hebrews 9:13-14).

• Share His offer of forgiveness so hearts—and lands—are transformed (2 Corinthians 5:20).

Encouragement to persevere

• God promises to “heal their land” when His people humble themselves and turn from wicked ways (2 Chronicles 7:14).

• Even in dark times, a faithful remnant can preserve a community like “salt” preserves meat (Matthew 5:13).

• Our labor in the Lord is never wasted; He notices and rewards those who keep His dwelling places clean (1 Corinthians 15:58; Hebrews 6:10).
