In what ways can we trust God to overcome obstacles in our lives? Setting the Scene • 1 Chronicles 11:5 records, “The inhabitants of Jebus said to David, ‘You will never get in here!’ Nevertheless, David captured the fortress of Zion (that is, the City of David).” • Jerusalem looked impregnable. The Jebusites jeered, confident their walls would stop David. • Yet David advanced, not because his army was bigger, but because his God was greater. God’s Promise Outshines Any Wall • Long before this moment, God had anointed David king (1 Samuel 16:13). Every promise attached to that calling—including securing Israel’s capital—stood unshakable. • When God speaks, the obstacle—no matter how fortified—cannot nullify His word (Numbers 23:19). Enemies May Taunt, but God Triumphs • The Jebusite shout: “You will never get in here!” mirrors voices we still hear: – “You’ll never break that habit.” – “Your family will never change.” – “That dream is impossible.” • David’s answer was trust, not rebuttal. He proved Romans 8:31 true centuries before Paul penned it: “If God is for us, who can be against us?”. How We Trust God to Overcome Today 1. Look to His Promises • Study and speak them (Joshua 1:8–9). • Personalize them—what God said to David about Zion, He echoes to us about every God-given assignment. 2. Lean on His Presence • 1 Chronicles 11:9: “David became greater and greater, for the LORD of Hosts was with him.” • Obstacles shrink in the awareness that the Almighty walks with us (Hebrews 13:5–6). 3. Step Forward in Obedience • David didn’t wait for the walls to fall; he moved (2 Samuel 5:7–8 details the water-shaft strategy). • Faith acts even while the problem still looks sturdy (James 2:17). 4. Expect Creative Solutions • God supplied an unexpected entry point for David. • He still opens “a way where there is no way” (Isaiah 43:19). 5. Persevere Until the Breakthrough • The fortress fell “nevertheless.” Perseverance transforms a taunt into a testimony (Galatians 6:9). 6. Celebrate the Ongoing Victories • Each conquered wall builds confidence for the next (1 Samuel 17:37; 2 Corinthians 2:14). Encouraging Companion Verses • Philippians 4:13: “I can do all things through Christ who gives me strength.” • Isaiah 45:2: “I will go before you and level the mountains; I will break down the gates of bronze and cut through the bars of iron.” • 2 Corinthians 2:14: “But thanks be to God, who always leads us in triumphal procession in Christ…” Every “You will never” obstacle meets its match in the God who says, “Nevertheless.” |
