How can believers aid church leaders?
In what ways can believers support their church leaders based on Ezekiel 34:1?

Setting the Scene

Ezekiel 34:1: “Then the word of the LORD came to me, saying,”

God’s pattern is clear: He speaks, His messenger listens, and the people respond. When the Word reaches a shepherd’s heart, the flock is next in line to receive it. Our role is to keep that line clear and strong.

Ways Believers Can Support Their Shepherds

• Pray diligently

– Ask God to keep their ears tuned to His voice (Colossians 4:3).

– Intercede for protection from distraction, discouragement, and deception (2 Thessalonians 3:1-2).

• Encourage immersion in Scripture

– Free their schedule for study and meditation (Acts 6:4).

– Offer resources—books, conferences, tools—that deepen their grasp of the Word (2 Timothy 2:15).

• Listen and obey the teaching they bring

– “Obey your leaders and submit to them” (Hebrews 13:17).

– Let prompt, joyful obedience show that their labor is not in vain (Philippians 2:16).

• Express respect and gratitude

– “Esteem them very highly in love because of their work” (1 Thessalonians 5:12-13).

– Simple words, notes, or public acknowledgment reinforce that their service matters.

• Provide material support

– “The laborer is worthy of his wages” (1 Timothy 5:17-18).

– Regular, generous giving relieves financial strain and allows undivided focus on ministry (Galatians 6:6).

• Share burdens

– Step in with practical help—meals, childcare, errands—especially during high-pressure seasons (Galatians 6:2).

– Form teams for facility care, administration, and outreach so leaders aren’t stretched thin (Exodus 17:12).

• Guard their reputation

– Refuse gossip; require evidence before entertaining an accusation (1 Timothy 5:19).

– Speak well of them inside and outside the church (Proverbs 31:23).

Why This Matters

Supporting leaders means valuing the Word that comes through them. When shepherds thrive:

• The flock is fed sound doctrine (Titus 1:9).

• Wandering sheep are sought and strengthened (Ezekiel 34:4-6).

• God’s name is honored as His truth advances without hindrance (2 Thessalonians 3:1).

Putting It into Practice This Week

• Choose a specific time each day to pray by name for pastors, elders, and their families.

• Send a brief message of appreciation referencing a recent sermon or act of care.

• Set aside part of your budget to bolster ministry needs or a leader’s personal need.

• Volunteer for one task that lifts a weight from their shoulders.

The Word came to Ezekiel first so the people could benefit. When we uphold those who proclaim that same Word today, we honor God’s design and ensure His voice remains loud and clear in the congregation.
