How can we access God's healing power?
In what ways can we seek God's power to heal and transform today?

The Scene in Luke 5:17

“ One day Jesus was teaching, and Pharisees and teachers of the Law were sitting there who had come from every village of Galilee and Judea and from Jerusalem. And the power of the Lord was present for Him to heal the sick.”

• A packed house, religious leaders watching, desperate people crowding.

• Luke underscores that “the power of the Lord was present,” not merely Jesus’ compassion but God’s tangible, active power.

• That same power has never diminished (Hebrews 13:8).

God’s Power to Heal Is Still Present

Ephesians 1:19-20—“the surpassing greatness of His power toward us who believe… the same as He exerted in Christ.”

Acts 1:8—“You will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you.”

• Scripture presents healing as both physical and spiritual: Isaiah 53:4-5; 1 Peter 2:24.

Ways We Actively Seek His Healing and Transforming Power

1. Draw Near to Jesus

• In Luke 5, healing happens in His presence.

Hebrews 4:16 invites us to “approach the throne of grace with confidence.”

2. Ask in Persistent Faith

Luke 11:9—“Ask… seek… knock.”

• Blind Bartimaeus refused to be silenced (Luke 18:38-43).

3. Pray Together and Anoint the Sick

James 5:14-16 commands elders to anoint with oil, pray in faith, and expect results.

• The whole body joins in confession and intercession—sin blocks but repentance clears the channel.

4. Rely on the Gifts of the Spirit

1 Corinthians 12:9 speaks of “gifts of healing” distributed by the Spirit “as He wills.”

• We welcome and steward these gifts humbly, never manipulating but always discerning.

5. Declare Christ’s Finished Work

Isaiah 53:5, 1 Peter 2:24—healing flows from the atonement.

• We speak His promises aloud, anchoring our hearts in what He accomplished at the cross.

6. Maintain an Atmosphere of Worship

Psalm 22:3—God “enthroned on the praises of Israel.”

• Worship shifts focus from need to the Healer, inviting His manifest presence.

7. Extend Compassionate Touch

Mark 1:41—Jesus “reached out His hand.”

• Simple, faith-filled touch coupled with prayer often unlocks breakthrough.

8. Foster Expectant Community

• In Luke 5:18-20, friends lowered the paralytic; their faith moved Jesus.

• Small groups, church gatherings, and households should be places where carrying one another to Christ is normal.

Living by Faith, Not Sight

• We trust the Word even when symptoms linger.

2 Corinthians 5:7—“We walk by faith, not by sight.”

• Gratitude and confession of Scripture guard against doubt.

When Healing Hasn’t Arrived Yet

• Continue seeking (Luke 18:1).

• Submit to God’s sovereignty while refusing to lower expectation (Philippians 4:6-7).

• Let trials refine character (Romans 5:3-4) and deepen dependence.

A Community That Carries Each Other to Jesus

• Practical steps:

– Schedule regular times of corporate prayer for the sick.

– Offer meals, rides, and encouragement while contending for healing.

– Share testimonies; Revelation 12:11 says we overcome “by the word of their testimony.”

Closing Encouragement

The same Lord whose power filled that crowded house in Luke 5 is with us now. As we press into His presence, pray in faith, and love one another boldly, we can confidently expect His healing and transforming power to flow today.
