How can we avoid coveting possessions?
In what ways can we guard against coveting others' possessions as seen here?

Setting the Scene

Judges 18:14

“Then the five men who had gone to spy out the land of Laish said to their brothers, ‘Do you know that in one of these houses there is an ephod and household idols, a carved image and a cast idol? Now consider what you should do.’ ”

The spies of Dan had already set their hearts on what belonged to someone else. Coveting pushed them toward stealing Micah’s idols and eventually toward violence.

Why Coveting Is So Dangerous

• It is a direct violation of the Tenth Commandment.

Exodus 20:17 — “You shall not covet your neighbor’s house. You shall not covet your neighbor’s wife, or his manservant or maidservant, his ox or donkey, or anything that belongs to your neighbor.”

• Coveting feeds idolatry. The Danites wanted objects they believed could give them security, turning their trust away from God.

• The heart attitude spreads into other sins. Coveting in Judges 18 grows into theft (vv. 18-20) and bloodshed (vv. 27-29).

Practical Safeguards from Scripture

1. Cultivate contentment.

 • 1 Timothy 6:6-8 — “Godliness with contentment is great gain… if we have food and clothing, we will be content with these.”

 • Philippians 4:11 — “I have learned to be content regardless of my circumstances.”

Choosing gratitude for God’s daily provision weakens envy at the root.

2. Keep your life free from greed.

Hebrews 13:5 — “Keep your lives free from the love of money and be content with what you have, because God has said, ‘Never will I leave you; never will I forsake you.’ ”

A steady awareness of the Lord’s presence replaces the craving for more.

3. Guard eyes and heart.

Psalm 119:36-37 — “Turn my heart to Your testimonies and not to covetous gain. Turn my eyes away from worthless things; revive me with Your word.”

Intentional limits on what we watch, read, and scroll protect the inner life.

4. Seek first the Kingdom.

Matthew 6:33 — “But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things will be added unto you.”

Pursuing God’s agenda redirects ambition toward eternal priorities.

5. Practice generosity.

Acts 20:35 — “It is more blessed to give than to receive.”

Regular giving breaks the grip of possessiveness and turns resources into ministry tools.

6. Stay accountable within community.

Hebrews 10:24-25 — “Let us consider how to spur one another on to love and good deeds… let us encourage one another.”

Transparent friendships help identify envy early and replace it with mutual encouragement.

Daily Heart Checks

• List specific blessings each morning and thank God aloud.

• Limit exposure to materialistic media that fuels comparison.

• Replace impulse buying with a pause to pray for wisdom.

• Review financial and time commitments, ensuring space for generosity and service.

Encouragement to Walk in Freedom

Luke 12:15 — “Watch out! Guard yourselves against every form of greed, for a man’s life does not consist in the abundance of his possessions.”

Life rooted in Christ frees the heart from restless wanting. By leaning on His faithful presence, cultivating gratitude, and pouring out generosity, believers guard against the coveting that trapped the tribe of Dan and instead walk in the contented liberty God intends.
