How can we avoid the urge to gossip?
What practical steps can we take to resist the temptation of "gossip"?

Key Verse

“Let no unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building up the one in need and bringing grace to those who listen.” (Ephesians 4:29)

What Is Gossip?

• Sharing information that is not yours to share

• Speaking about others in a way that damages or diminishes them

• Passing along rumors or half-truths, even if they seem harmless

Why Gossip Is Dangerous

• It violates love for neighbor (Leviticus 19:16)

• It sows discord and breaks trust (Proverbs 16:28)

• It grieves the Holy Spirit who indwells every believer (Ephesians 4:30)

• It defiles the speaker as much as the subject (James 3:6)

Practical Steps to Resist Gossip

Guard the heart

• “The mouth speaks out of that which fills the heart.” (Matthew 12:34)

• Daily ask the Lord to cleanse motives and renew a spirit of love.

Install a verbal filter

• Before you speak, run words through three quick questions:

– Is it true?

– Is it necessary?

– Is it gracious?

• If any answer is “no,” stay silent (Proverbs 17:28).

Redirect the conversation

• Change the subject to something edifying or neutral.

• Offer a compliment about the person being discussed.

• If needed, politely excuse yourself from the discussion (Proverbs 14:7).

Speak blessing instead of blame

• Replace harmful talk with words that build up (Ephesians 4:29).

• Practice encouraging at least one person each day.

Cultivate confidential integrity

• Keep entrusted information private (Proverbs 11:13).

• If someone begins to share a secret that isn’t theirs, gently say, “That sounds personal; have you talked to them directly?” (Matthew 18:15).

Surround yourself with accountable friends

• Walk with believers who value holy speech (1 Corinthians 15:33).

• Invite a trusted friend to correct you when your words slip.

Fill the mind with what edifies

• Meditate on Philippians 4:8.

• Listening to uplifting music, podcasts, or Scripture readings leaves less room for idle chatter.

Stay busy with purposeful work

• “Make it your ambition to lead a quiet life… and work with your hands.” (1 Thessalonians 4:11)

• Idleness often breeds gossip; meaningful tasks crowd it out.

Scriptures to Memorize

Proverbs 10:19 — “Where words are many, sin is unavoidable, but he who restrains his lips is wise.”

James 1:19 — “Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak, and slow to anger.”

Psalm 19:14 — “May the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be pleasing in Your sight, O LORD, my Rock and my Redeemer.”

Putting It into Practice Today

1. Choose one of the memory verses and recite it every time you feel the urge to pass along news.

2. Commit to a 24-hour “grace-only speech fast,” allowing no negative comments about anyone.

3. End the day by recalling how God used your words to bring grace instead of gossip.
