How can we bring joy to our parents?
In what ways can we "bring joy" to our parents today?

The Heart of the Passage

Proverbs 10:1: ‘A wise son brings joy to his father, but a foolish son brings grief to his mother.’”

Living Out Wisdom That Delights Our Parents

• Cultivate godly character—choose integrity, humility, and purity (Proverbs 20:7; Philippians 4:8).

• Cheerfully obey and honor their guidance (Ephesians 6:1-3; Colossians 3:20).

• Work diligently in studies and vocation; avoid laziness (Proverbs 6:6-11; 22:29).

• Guard your tongue—speak respectfully and graciously (Proverbs 15:1; 18:21).

• Manage money wisely; avoid debt and impulsive spending (Proverbs 13:11; Romans 13:8).

• Maintain a righteous circle of friends; seek fellowship that strengthens faith (Proverbs 13:20; 1 Corinthians 15:33).

• Honor them publicly; express gratitude and speak well of them before others (Proverbs 31:28; 1 Timothy 5:1).

• Care for them as they age—emotional support, practical help, financial assistance when needed (1 Timothy 5:4, 8).

• Pray for them daily, asking God’s blessing and protection (1 Samuel 12:23).

• Pursue reconciliation quickly when conflict arises (Matthew 5:23-24; Romans 12:18).

Practical Steps for Every Season

• Childhood: cheerful obedience, teachable spirit, simple acts of kindness (help with chores, share encouraging words).

• Teenage years: honest communication, purity in relationships, responsible use of technology, visible commitment to Christ.

• Young adulthood: seek their counsel on major decisions, live within means, maintain regular contact even if far away.

• Established adulthood: invite them into family traditions, share spiritual insights, include them in celebrations and milestones.

• Their later years: listen to their stories, protect their dignity, assist with healthcare, ensure they remain connected to church and community.

The Ultimate Reason We Bring Joy

Honoring father and mother ultimately honors the Lord, who sovereignly placed them in our lives. As we live wisely, we fulfill Proverbs 23:24-25: “The father of a righteous man will rejoice greatly, and he who fathers a wise son will delight in him. May your father and mother be glad; may she who gave you birth rejoice!”.

How does Proverbs 29:3 connect with Proverbs 13:20 on choosing companions wisely?
