How can we follow God's light, not ours?
In what ways can we ensure we follow God's light, not our own?

Isaiah 50:11 – The Warning

“Behold, all you who kindle a fire, who encircle yourselves with sparks: walk in the light of your fire and in the flames you have set ablaze. This is what you will receive from My hand: You will lie down in torment.”

A Tale of Two Lights

• God’s light: “…I am the Light of the world. Whoever follows Me will never walk in the darkness, but will have the light of life.” (John 8:12)

• Man-made light: “…There is a way that seems right to a man, but its end is the way of death.” (Proverbs 14:12)

Why Our Own Fire Fails

• Limited perspective – we “see in a mirror dimly” (1 Corinthians 13:12).

• Self-deception – “The heart is deceitful above all things” (Jeremiah 17:9).

• Power shortage – “Apart from Me you can do nothing” (John 15:5).

• Inevitable burnout – “The lamp of the wicked will be extinguished” (Proverbs 24:20).

Practical Ways to Stay in God’s Light

1. Daily Scripture intake

• “Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.” (Psalm 119:105)

• Read, meditate, and memorize passages that reveal His character.

2. Consistent obedience

• “Be doers of the word, and not hearers only.” (James 1:22)

• Act promptly on what He shows; light increases with obedience.

3. Prayerful dependence

• “Trust in the LORD with all your heart…He will make your paths straight.” (Proverbs 3:5-6)

• Ask specifically for wisdom before decisions (James 1:5).

4. Spirit-led living

• “Walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh.” (Galatians 5:16)

• Cultivate sensitivity: surrender, listen, respond.

5. Christ-centered community

• “Let us consider how to spur one another on toward love and good deeds.” (Hebrews 10:24-25)

• Invite accountability; borrowed light helps when ours grows dim.

6. Eternal focus

• “Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things.” (Colossians 3:2)

• Remember the coming evaluation (2 Corinthians 5:10).

Guardrails Against Self-Made Sparks

• Check motives: Is this for God’s glory or my recognition?

• Test ideas with Scripture: If it contradicts the Word, discard it.

• Seek wise counsel: “Plans fail for lack of counsel, but with many advisers they succeed.” (Proverbs 15:22)

• Watch for peace vs. turmoil: “Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts.” (Colossians 3:15)

When We Slip Into Our Own Light

• Confess quickly (1 John 1:9).

• Realign with truth (Psalm 51:6).

• Accept His correction as love (Hebrews 12:6-11).

• Move forward—no condemnation for those in Christ (Romans 8:1).

Living Out the Contrast

• God’s light brings clarity, freedom, and life (John 1:4; 8:32).

• Self-lit paths end in confusion, bondage, and regret (Isaiah 50:11).

Choose the steady, unfailing blaze of His presence today and every step ahead.
