How can we foster peace and growth?
In what ways can we pursue peace and edification in our community?

The Heart of Romans 14:18

“For whoever serves Christ in this way is pleasing to God and approved by men.” (Romans 14:18)

Paul has just said the kingdom is “righteousness, peace, and joy in the Holy Spirit” (v. 17). When we pursue peace and mutual growth, we are actually serving Christ Himself.

Why Peace and Edification Matter

• Peace keeps Christ’s body unified so His gospel shines clearly (John 17:21).

• Edification (building up) strengthens believers to stand firm and serve boldly (Ephesians 4:12–16).

• Together, they bring “pleasing to God and approved by men” results—He smiles, and outsiders see authentic faith.

Practical Steps Toward Peace in the Community

• Focus on kingdom essentials

– “The kingdom of God is not a matter of eating and drinking” (Romans 14:17).

– Refuse to elevate personal preferences to gospel-level issues.

• Choose gentle, grace-filled speech

– “Let no unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building up” (Ephesians 4:29).

– Slow down, listen well, lower your volume, guard sarcasm.

• Make room for differing convictions

– “Each of us will give an account of himself to God” (Romans 14:12).

– Allow a brother or sister to honor Christ differently in disputable matters.

• Pursue reconciliation quickly

– “If possible, on your part, live at peace with everyone” (Romans 12:18).

– Initiate the hard conversation; extend forgiveness before it’s asked.

• Practice visible acts of kindness

– “Blessed are the peacemakers” (Matthew 5:9).

– Deliver a meal, help with errands, speak words of thanks—small bridges create big peace.

Practical Steps Toward Edification in the Community

• Speak intentional encouragement

– “Encourage and build one another up” (1 Thessalonians 5:11).

– Affirm evidence of grace you see in others.

• Share Scripture regularly

– “Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly… teaching and admonishing one another” (Colossians 3:16).

– Send a verse, start a home Bible reading circle, quote God’s promises in conversation.

• Serve together

– “No one should seek his own good, but the good of others” (1 Corinthians 10:24).

– Team up for outreach, benevolence, facility care—shared mission builds.

• Mentor and be mentored

– Older believers pass on wisdom; younger believers bring fresh zeal (Titus 2:2-6).

• Pray for one another’s growth

– “Always laboring fervently for you in prayers, that you may stand mature” (Colossians 4:12).

Staying Motivated by Gospel Truth

• Remember Christ first pursued peace—with His own blood He made peace (Colossians 1:20).

• Rely on the Spirit’s fruit: “love, joy, peace, patience…” (Galatians 5:22-23).

• Look ahead to the day when every act of peace and edification receives His “Well done.”

“So then, let us pursue what leads to peace and to mutual edification.” (Romans 14:19)
