How can we guide them to God's commands?
In what ways can we "show them the way" to follow God's commands?

Context of Exodus 18:20

“Teach them the statutes and laws, and show them the way to live and the work they must do.”

Jethro advised Moses that truth is not merely recited—people must be shown how to walk it out. The verse contains two inseparable tasks: teach God’s word and model God’s ways.

Teach the Statutes Clearly

• Open the Scriptures regularly, explaining “the statutes and laws.” (Deuteronomy 6:6-7; 2 Timothy 3:16-17)

• Break truth into everyday language—illustrations, stories, real-life examples.

• Connect commands to God’s character so learners grasp not only the “what” but the “why.”

Model the Way Consistently

• Live what you teach. “In everything, show yourself to be an example by doing good works.” (Titus 2:7)

• Let obedience be visible: decisions, speech, finances, relationships.

• Admit failures promptly; repentance is part of showing the way.

Provide Hands-On Training

• Invite others to serve beside you—ministry, hospitality, mercy projects. (Ephesians 4:11-12)

• Assign responsibility appropriate to maturity; give feedback rooted in Scripture.

• Celebrate small steps of faithfulness to reinforce progress.

Maintain Constant Conversation

• Speak of God’s commands “when you sit at home and when you walk along the road.” (Deuteronomy 6:7)

• Integrate God’s word into everyday moments—news headlines, school challenges, workplace dilemmas.

• Let questions and observations flow naturally from life to Scripture and back again.

Cultivate an Atmosphere of Accountability

• Pair believers in mentoring or small groups where application is discussed openly. (Proverbs 27:17)

• Hold one another to specific, measurable obedience—no vague generalities.

• Encourage, correct, and restore with gentleness. (Galatians 6:1)

Pray and Depend on the Spirit

• Ask God to open hearts, illumine minds, and empower obedience. (John 16:13)

• Intercede by name for those you are guiding; spiritual change is Spirit-driven.

• Thank Him for every evidence of growth, reinforcing that success belongs to the Lord.

Promise of Blessing for Obedience

• “This Book of the Law must not depart from your mouth… then you will prosper and succeed.” (Joshua 1:8)

• “Teaching them to obey all that I have commanded you… I am with you always.” (Matthew 28:20)

When instruction and example walk hand in hand, those we influence see a clear path and gain courage to follow God’s commands.
