In what ways can we avoid Asa's mistake in our own lives? Asa’s Shift of Trust “Baasha king of Israel came up against Judah and fortified Ramah…” (2 Chronicles 16:1). Instead of seeking the LORD as before, Asa emptied the temple treasuries to hire Ben-hadad of Aram for help. The prophet Hanani later summed it up: “You have relied on the king of Aram and not on the LORD your God” (16:7). How to Avoid the Same Trap • Keep dependence vertical, not horizontal “Some trust in chariots and others in horses, but we trust in the name of the LORD our God” (Psalm 20:7). – Refuse to make human alliances our first resort. – Pause before every major decision and ask, “Am I leaning on God or on a workaround?” • Stay in continual prayer “Asa called to the LORD his God, saying, ‘It is nothing for You to help…’ ”(14:11). – What once marked Asa’s life must keep marking ours: spontaneous, faith-filled prayer. – When crisis hits, let Philippians 4:6-7 be reflex, not afterthought. • Remember past deliverances “Were not the Cushites… a vast army… yet the LORD delivered them into your hand” (16:8). – Keep a journal of answered prayers. – Revisit testimonies to smother new fears with old proofs of God’s faithfulness. • Welcome godly correction “The eyes of the LORD roam to and fro…” (16:9). Hanani’s rebuke was an invitation to repent; Asa jailed him instead (16:10). – Submit to Scripture, sermons, and trusted believers who confront in love (Proverbs 27:6). – Ask the Spirit to soften any defensive reflex. • Guard against creeping self-sufficiency “Are you now being perfected by the flesh?” (Galatians 3:3). – Success can breed independence; fight it with daily acknowledgments of need (John 15:5). – Fast periodically to feel physical weakness and recall spiritual dependence. • Finish with the same faith you started “As for you, be strong and do not give up, for your work will be rewarded” (2 Chronicles 15:7). – Resolve that no past victory excuses present compromise. – Stay watchful; complacency is often the final enemy (1 Corinthians 10:12). Living Differently Today • Trust: Lean first on the LORD, not on clever fixes (Proverbs 3:5-6). • Pray: Turn worries into petitions before any human strategy forms. • Recall: Celebrate previous rescues to fuel present confidence. • Listen: Accept rebuke as grace, not threat. • Persevere: Keep finishing faith-assignments until the very last lap (Hebrews 12:1-2). |
