How can we prioritize others' interests?
In what ways can we practice "looking to the interests of others"?

Rooted in Christ’s Example

Philippians 2:4: “Each of you should look not only to your own interests, but also to the interests of others.”

• The command is anchored in the immediate context of verses 5-8, where Jesus “emptied Himself” and “humbled Himself by becoming obedient to death.”

• Because Christ literally set aside His rights for us, we are called to set aside self-focus for others (1 John 3:16-18; John 13:34-35).

Practical Ways to Look to Others’ Interests

1. Intentional Listening

• Give undivided attention—phones down, eyes up (James 1:19).

• Ask follow-up questions to understand pain points, hopes, and needs.

2. Tangible Acts of Service

• Share meals, offer rides, help with childcare or house projects (Galatians 5:13).

• Use professional skills pro bono for those who cannot afford them (1 Peter 4:10).

3. Financial Generosity

• Budget a “mercy line item” to meet unexpected needs (2 Corinthians 9:6-8).

• Support missionaries, local churches, crisis-pregnancy centers, and food pantries.

4. Bearing Burdens

• Walk with a brother or sister through grief, addiction recovery, or job loss (Galatians 6:2).

• Pray with them on the spot, not merely promise to do so later (Colossians 4:2).

5. Advocacy for the Vulnerable

• Speak up for unborn children, widows, and orphans (Proverbs 31:8-9; James 1:27).

• Volunteer with foster care, adoption ministries, or refugee assistance programs.

6. Cultivating Hospitality

• Open your home for Bible studies and meals (Romans 12:13).

• Create a welcoming environment where outsiders become family.

7. Encouraging Spiritual Growth

• Share Scripture regularly, text verses, recommend solid resources (Hebrews 10:24-25).

• Disciple newer believers, helping them walk in obedience.

Guarding Our Hearts Against Selfishness

• Daily confession and repentance keep motives pure (Psalm 139:23-24).

• Fast periodically to loosen the grip of self-gratification (Matthew 6:16-18).

• Memorize verses like Philippians 2:3-4 and 1 Corinthians 10:24: “No one should seek his own good, but the good of others.”

The Joy and Witness That Follow

• Loving sacrificially fulfills the law of Christ (Galatians 6:2).

• A church that prioritizes others shines “like stars in the world” (Philippians 2:15).

• God is glorified when people “see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven” (Matthew 5:16).
