How can we respect elders like Solomon?
In what ways can we show respect to our elders, like Solomon did?

Solomon’s Pattern of Honor (1 Kings 2:19)

“ …The king stood up to meet her, bowed down to her, and sat on his throne. He had a throne brought for the king’s mother, and she sat down at his right hand.”

Solomon models three concrete acts of respect:

• He rose to greet Bathsheba.

• He bowed before her.

• He seated her at his right hand—symbolizing dignity and shared authority.

These gestures speak volumes about the way God calls us to treat elders.

Practical Ways to Mirror Solomon’s Respect Today

• Give Undivided Attention

 – Stand or pause what you’re doing when an older person enters (Leviticus 19:32).

 – Maintain eye contact and listen without multitasking.

• Speak with Honor

 – Choose courteous titles (“Mr.,” “Mrs.,” “sir,” “ma’am”) and gentle words (Proverbs 15:1).

 – Avoid interrupting; let them finish their thoughts (Proverbs 18:13).

• Elevate Their Dignity

 – Offer the better seat or place at the table, just as Solomon offered the throne.

 – Invite them to share from their experience in meetings or family decisions (Job 12:12).

• Seek and Heed Their Counsel

 – Ask questions about life, faith, and history (Proverbs 20:18).

 – Apply their wisdom—unlike Rehoboam, who rejected elder counsel and split the kingdom (2 Chronicles 10).

• Provide Practical Care

 – Help with chores, technology, transportation, or medical appointments (1 Timothy 5:4).

 – Plan regular visits or calls to combat isolation (James 1:27).

• Protect Their Reputation

 – Refuse gossip or disrespectful jokes about age (Ephesians 4:29).

 – Defend them graciously when others belittle or overlook them (Proverbs 31:8-9).

Foundational Motivations from Scripture

• Fourth Commandment: “Honor your father and your mother” (Exodus 20:12).

• Promise of blessing: “that it may go well with you and that you may live long on the earth” (Ephesians 6:2-3).

• Divine perspective: “Gray hair is a crown of glory” (Proverbs 16:31).

Heart Posture Above All

External acts matter, but God also weighs the motive. Genuine respect flows from recognizing that elders bear God’s image and have walked paths we have yet to tread. When we honor them, we honor the Lord who sovereignly placed them before us.

How does 1 Kings 2:19 connect with the commandment to honor your mother?
