How can we seek God's help for truth?
In what ways can we seek God's help to avoid falsehoods today?

What Agur Asked—and Why It Matters Today

“Two things I ask of You—do not refuse me before I die: Keep falsehood and deceitful speech far from me” (Proverbs 30:7–8).

Agur’s first request is laser-focused: he wants God to protect him from lies—both the ones others tell and the ones his own heart might whisper. That same protection is still essential for believers surrounded by conflicting voices every day.

Why Falsehood Is So Dangerous

• Lies distort our view of God (Genesis 3:1–5).

• Lies harden the conscience (1 Timothy 4:2).

• Lies fracture relationships (Ephesians 4:25).

• Lies invite the enemy’s influence, for “there is no truth in him” (John 8:44).

Ways to Seek God’s Help in Avoiding Falsehoods

1. Daily, Specific Prayer

• Follow Agur’s pattern: ask God each morning to “keep falsehood… far from me.”

James 1:5: “If any of you lacks wisdom, he should ask God… and it will be given to him.” Pray for wisdom to recognize half-truths in news feeds, conversations, and inner thoughts.

2. Saturate Your Mind with Scripture

John 17:17: “Sanctify them by the truth; Your word is truth.”

• Practical ideas:

– Read one chapter aloud; hearing reinforces truth.

– Memorize short passages (Psalm 119:11); when a lie surfaces, answer with the exact words of God.

– Keep a verse card where you browse online to remind you what is real.

3. Wear the Belt of Truth

Ephesians 6:14: “Stand firm then, with the belt of truth buckled around your waist.”

• Picture a soldier fastening his armor; consciously “strap on” truth before stepping into social media, work, or school. Ask, “Does this claim fit the grid of Scripture?”

4. Guard Your Heart’s Gateways

Philippians 4:8 lists the filter—whatever is true, honorable, right, pure, lovely, commendable.

• Evaluate entertainment, articles, and conversations with that filter. When something fails the test, shut it off.

5. Cultivate Honest Speech

Proverbs 12:22: “Lying lips are detestable to the LORD, but those who act faithfully are His delight.”

• Commit to accuracy in texts, posts, and everyday talk. Even small exaggerations erode sensitivity to truth.

6. Rely on the Holy Spirit’s Promptings

John 16:13: “When the Spirit of truth comes, He will guide you into all truth.”

• When you sense an inner check—pause, pray, and compare the matter with Scripture before accepting or repeating it.

7. Build Truth-Centered Friendships

Hebrews 3:13: “Encourage one another daily… so that none of you may be hardened by sin’s deceitfulness.”

• Share what you’re learning; invite brothers and sisters to correct you if you stray into error.

8. Trust God’s Provision

• Agur’s second request (Proverbs 30:8–9) ties material contentment to truthfulness. Greed and fear make lying attractive.

• Thank God for today’s “daily bread,” believing He will supply tomorrow’s needs without compromise.

Living the Prayer

Make Proverbs 30:7–8 your own:

• Begin each day asking God to shield you from deception.

• End each day thanking Him for the moments He exposed a lie and strengthened you to walk in truth.

By continually turning to the God of truth, we follow Agur’s example and find solid footing in a world of shifting stories.
