How can we serve our communities?
In what ways can we "offer sacrifices" of service in our communities?

Scripture Focus

“Do not neglect to do good and to share with others, for with such sacrifices God is pleased.” (Hebrews 13:16)

Understanding Sacrificial Service Today

• In the New Covenant, animal offerings are fulfilled in Christ (Hebrews 10:10).

• Our “sacrifices” now are tangible acts of love that cost us something—time, resources, convenience, even reputation.

• These deeds are rendered first to God, then to people; they rise like a fragrant offering (Philippians 4:18) when carried out in Jesus’ name (Colossians 3:17).

Practical Expressions of Sacrificial Service in the Community

• Provide regular meals for shut-ins, single parents, or families facing illness.

• Offer free childcare so couples or overwhelmed parents can rest.

• Mentor at-risk youth, tutoring after school or teaching job skills.

• Visit nursing homes or hospitals, reading Scripture, singing hymns, and offering companionship (James 1:27).

• Support crisis-pregnancy centers with diapers, formula, and compassionate counsel (Proverbs 24:11-12).

• Volunteer in disaster relief teams, giving manual labor and emotional support (Isaiah 58:10).

• Host financial-management classes for the under-resourced, coupling instruction with gospel hope.

• Sponsor refugees, helping them navigate housing, language, and employment (Leviticus 19:34).

• Organize neighborhood clean-ups; beautify parks or public schools as common-grace blessings (Jeremiah 29:7).

• Give sacrificially to benevolence funds, missionaries, and local shelters, prioritizing generosity over personal luxuries (2 Corinthians 9:6-8).

Heart Attitudes Behind the Service

• Humility—serving unseen, content with God’s approval alone (Matthew 6:3-4).

• Joy—offering ourselves willingly, not under compulsion (Psalm 100:2).

• Compassion—letting Christ’s love constrain us (2 Corinthians 5:14).

• Faith—trusting God to supply all we expend (Philippians 4:19).

• Perseverance—continuing “as long as it is day” (John 9:4), even when appreciation is scant.

Blessings Attached to Serving

• Pleasing God: “with such sacrifices God is pleased” (Hebrews 13:16).

• Witnessing Christ: good works cause observers to glorify the Father (Matthew 5:16).

• Spiritual growth: service stretches faith and refines character (Romans 5:3-4).

• Eternal reward: “whatever good anyone does, this he will receive back from the Lord” (Ephesians 6:8).

Next Steps

• Ask the Lord where He wants you to invest.

• Start small, remain faithful, and trust Him to multiply the impact (Luke 16:10).
