How can we stay wise in life?
In what ways can we guard against "ceasing to be wise" in our lives?

Opening Scripture

“Cease listening to instruction, my son, and you will stray from the words of knowledge.” – Proverbs 19:27

Recognizing the Drift

• Wisdom wanes the moment the heart shuts its ears to God’s instruction

• Straying begins subtly, as drifting from a fixed point on calm water

• The warning is personal (“my son”), reminding every believer that no one is immune

Cultivating a Teachable Spirit

• Welcome correction: “He who hates correction is stupid.” – Proverbs 12:1

• Keep the heart soft by daily surrender to God’s authority

• Memorize and meditate on Scripture so truth can quickly realign the mind

Staying Rooted in the Word

• Set aside unhurried time for Bible reading (Psalm 1:2; 2 Timothy 3:15–16)

• Follow a systematic plan to prevent selective reading

• Journal insights to reinforce learning and trace God’s faithfulness over time

Practicing Humble Obedience

• Act promptly on what Scripture reveals (James 1:22)

• View obedience as worship rather than obligation

• Celebrate small steps of faith to build momentum for larger acts of obedience

Choosing Wise Companions and Counsel

• “Walk with the wise and you will become wise, for a companion of fools suffers harm.” – Proverbs 13:20

• Seek mentors who model biblical discernment

• Evaluate media, books, and influencers through the lens of Philippians 4:8

Prayerful Dependence on the Spirit

• Ask the Spirit to illuminate Scripture and expose blind spots (John 16:13)

• Invite the Spirit to cultivate the fruit of humility that keeps wisdom growing (Galatians 5:22–23)

Practicing Consistent Self-Examination

• Regularly assess thoughts, words, and actions against biblical standards (Psalm 139:23-24)

• Confess quickly when conviction comes, preventing a buildup of callousness

• Remember God’s promise: “He gives greater grace” (James 4:6), ensuring the supply needed to remain wise

Living Alert and Intentional

• Treat every day as an opportunity either to listen or to wander

• Guard joyfully, knowing that God’s wisdom leads to life, peace, and lasting fruit (Proverbs 3:13-18)
