In what ways can we ensure we "keep" God's word in our lives? Keeping the Word Begins with Love “Jesus replied, ‘If anyone loves Me, he will keep My word. My Father will love him, and We will come to him and make Our home with him.’” (John 14:23) • Keeping Scripture is inseparable from loving the Author. • Obedience flows from relationship, not ritual; seek a growing affection for Christ first. Make Room for His Word Daily • Schedule unhurried time in the morning or evening for reading and reflection. • Use a systematic plan (gospels, epistles, Psalms/Proverbs) so you meet the whole counsel of God. • “This Book of the Law must not depart from your mouth; you are to recite it day and night…” (Joshua 1:8). Hide It in Your Heart • Memorize key verses; start with one per week. • Write Scripture on index cards or sticky notes where you’ll see them. • “I have hidden Your word in my heart that I might not sin against You.” (Psalm 119:11). Speak It into Your Atmosphere • Read passages aloud during devotions—hearing reinforces retention (Romans 10:17). • Pray verses back to God, turning statements into personal declarations. • Share insights with family, friends, small groups; teaching cements learning (Colossians 3:16). Do What You Hear • After each reading, identify one concrete step of obedience. • Keep a journal: Scripture read → personal application → date acted upon. • “Be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves.” (James 1:22). Guard Against Compromise • Evaluate entertainment, conversations, and habits—do they align with biblical values? • When temptation arises, answer it with specific verses, following Jesus’ example in Matthew 4. • “Watch over your heart with all diligence, for from it flow springs of life.” (Proverbs 4:23). Rely on the Spirit’s Help • The Spirit teaches, reminds, and empowers obedience: “The Advocate… will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have told you.” (John 14:26). • Ask daily for illumination and strength to live out what you read. Celebrate the Fruit • Record answered prayers, transformed attitudes, and victories over sin—visible evidence that the Word is taking root. • Share testimonies to encourage others and reinforce your own commitment. • “Practice these things; immerse yourself in them, so that all may see your progress.” (1 Timothy 4:15). |
