How do 68 associates show teamwork's value?
How does the presence of "sixty-eight associates" highlight the value of teamwork?

Verse under Study

“Then Moses went out and told the people the words of the LORD. He gathered seventy elders of the people and had them stand around the tent. Then the LORD came down in the cloud and spoke with him, and He took some of the Spirit that was on Moses and placed it on the seventy elders. When the Spirit rested on them, they prophesied—but they never did so again. Two men, however, had remained in the camp—one named Eldad and the other Medad—and the Spirit also rested on them.” (Numbers 11:24-26)

The verse notes seventy elders, yet only sixty-eight were actually at the tent with Moses; Eldad and Medad stayed in the camp. That detail draws our attention to the value of every associate and the strength that comes from serving together.

The Bigger Picture: Why “Sixty-Eight Associates” Stands Out

• Moses had just voiced the burden of leading Israel alone (Numbers 11:14).

• God’s answer was not to lighten the task but to multiply the workers.

• Sixty-eight elders surrounded Moses—visible evidence that leadership is meant to be shared.

• Even Eldad and Medad, though absent from the tent, received the same Spirit, underscoring that teammates can serve in different places yet still contribute to the same mission.

Teamwork Built on a Shared Calling

• Common source of empowerment: “He took some of the Spirit that was on Moses and placed it on the seventy elders.” One Spirit, many servants (cf. 1 Corinthians 12:4-6).

• Common purpose: to shoulder the load of shepherding Israel (Numbers 11:17).

• Common witness: their prophesying confirmed to the nation that God endorsed this team.

Individual Roles within the Larger Body

• Physical presence (the sixty-eight) and remote presence (Eldad & Medad) both mattered.

• Variety of gifts unified by one mission (Romans 12:4-5).

• Joshua’s impulse to stop Eldad and Medad (Numbers 11:28) shows how easy it is to undervalue teammates who work differently; Moses’ reply—“Would that all the LORD’s people were prophets!” (v. 29)—celebrates every contributor.

Lessons for Us Today

• Leadership burdens are lightened when responsibilities are shared.

• The Spirit equips every believer, so no one is expendable.

• Distance or differing assignments do not diminish partnership; God can work through those who labor out of sight.

• Recognizing and releasing others into service protects us from burnout and advances God’s purposes more effectively.

Supporting Scriptures on Teamwork

Ecclesiastes 4:9-10—“Two are better than one… for if either falls, the one will lift up his companion.”

Proverbs 27:17—“As iron sharpens iron, so one man sharpens another.”

Ephesians 4:16—“From Him the whole body, fitted and held together by every supporting ligament, grows and builds itself up in love, as each part does its work.”

1 Corinthians 12:18-21—“But in fact, God has arranged the members of the body, every one of them, just as He desired… the eye cannot say to the hand, ‘I do not need you.’”

Take-Home Reminders

• God answers overload by adding coworkers.

• Every associate—whether one of the visible sixty-eight or the out-of-sight pair—is Spirit-empowered and necessary.

• Encouraging, trusting, and relying on teammates honors God’s design for His people and makes ministry sustainable and fruitful.
