How do we share in His sufferings today?
How can we share in "the fellowship of His sufferings" today?

Setting the Scene: Philippians 3:10

“I want to know Christ and the power of His resurrection and the fellowship of His sufferings, being conformed to Him in His death.”

What “Fellowship of His Sufferings” Means

• Shared experience: entering into what Christ endured for righteousness’ sake

• Identification: letting His values, priorities, and self-giving love shape us

• Conformity: allowing suffering to mold us into His likeness (cf. Romans 8:17)

How We Share in His Sufferings Today

• Persecution for righteousness – standing for biblical truth despite ridicule or loss (2 Timothy 3:12; John 15:18-20)

• Daily self-denial – “take up his cross daily” (Luke 9:23) by saying no to selfish desires

• Sacrificial service – pouring out time, money, energy for others (Colossians 1:24)

• Battling sin – crucifying the flesh and resisting temptation (Galatians 5:24)

• Bearing believers’ burdens – entering the pain of the persecuted church and suffering saints (2 Corinthians 1:5)

• Speaking truth in a hostile culture – refusing to compromise even when misunderstood

• Enduring life’s trials with Christ-centered hope – sickness, loss, or hardship become arenas for sharing His sufferings (James 1:2-4; Romans 5:3-5)

Encouragement from Scripture

1 Peter 4:13: “Rejoice that you share in the sufferings of Christ, so that you may be overjoyed at the revelation of His glory.”

Romans 8:18: “I consider that our present sufferings are not comparable to the glory that will be revealed in us.”

2 Corinthians 4:17: “For our light and momentary affliction is producing for us an eternal glory that is far beyond comparison.”

Practical Steps for Daily Participation

• Start each day surrendering your will to His, expecting difficulty yet trusting His strength

• Choose obedience over comfort when decisions collide with Scripture

• Encourage believers who are hurting; listen, pray, give practical help

• Invest in missions and aid to persecuted Christians worldwide

• Keep short accounts with God; confess sin quickly to stay in step with the Spirit

• Memorize promises that anchor joy amid hardship (Philippians 1:29; Hebrews 12:2-3)

Hope Beyond the Suffering

Sharing His sufferings links us inseparably to His resurrection power now and guaranteed glory later (Philippians 3:10-11). Temporary pains forge eternal rewards, deepen intimacy with Christ, and display His life through ours to a watching world.
