What role does prayer play in the growth of God's word today? The unstoppable advance of the Word “But the word of God continued to spread and multiply.” (Acts 12:24) Prayer precedes breakthrough • Just 19 words earlier we read, “So Peter was kept in prison, but the church was earnestly praying to God for him.” (Acts 12:5) • Luke intentionally links verse 5 with verse 24: earnest prayer → divine intervention → explosive growth. • Lesson: whenever believers pray, God moves barriers out of the way so His Word keeps marching forward. Prayer dismantles opposition • Herod tried to silence the gospel by killing James and arresting Peter (Acts 12:1-4). • God answered the church’s prayers by sending an angel, opening iron gates, and removing Herod himself (Acts 12:7-23). • Result: no ruler, policy, or prison can restrain Scripture when God’s people pray. Prayer opens doors and hearts • “Pray also for us, that God may open to us a door for the word.” (Colossians 4:3) • Lydia’s heart was opened by the Lord while Paul spoke (Acts 16:14). Behind every open heart is silent, faithful intercession. • 2 Thessalonians 3:1 echoes the theme: “pray…that the word of the Lord may spread rapidly and be honored.” Prayer emboldens messengers • After threats, the Jerusalem believers prayed for boldness; “they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and spoke the word of God boldly.” (Acts 4:31) • Paul repeatedly asks, “Pray…that I may proclaim it boldly” (Ephesians 6:18-20). • Courage to speak comes less from personality and more from saints on their knees. Prayer invites the Spirit’s power • Acts opens with united prayer (1:14) and the Spirit’s outpouring (2:1-4). The two events are inseparable. • The Spirit breathes life into the written Word (John 6:63). Prayer keeps us reliant on that breath, not on human strategy. Prayer keeps the Word centered • In Acts 6:4 the apostles resolved, “we will devote ourselves to prayer and to the ministry of the word.” • The combination guards the church from drifting into mere activism or hollow intellectualism. Practical ways to pray for Word-growth today • Ask God to remove specific obstacles—legal, cultural, spiritual—that hinder Scripture from being heard. • Intercede for pastors, missionaries, and everyday witnesses to speak with clarity and courage. • Pray for receptive hearts in your neighborhood, workplace, and family. • Cover new believers, that the Word would take deep root and bear fruit (Colossians 1:9-10). • Remember unreached peoples: plead that translations, teachers, and open doors converge for them. |
