How does this align with God's will?
How does this decision reflect the importance of aligning actions with God's will?

Setting the Scene

• The Levite had already delayed his journey several days at his father-in-law’s home in Bethlehem.

• After repeated invitations to prolong the visit, “But the man was unwilling to spend another night. He got up, departed, and came to a place opposite Jebus (that is, Jerusalem), with the two saddled donkeys and his concubine with him.” (Judges 19:10)

• It was late afternoon; nightfall and its dangers were near. Yet he chose to press on without seeking God’s direction.

The Choice in Verse 10

• Hasty: He refused further hospitality, favoring his own timetable over safety.

• Self-directed: No prayer, no prophetic word, no priestly consultation—he simply “got up and departed.”

• Short-sighted: Avoided pagan Jebus, assuming Gibeah (an Israelite town) would be safer, but the wickedness there proved far worse.

Lessons on Aligning Actions with God’s Will

• God values timing: “To everything there is a season…” (Ecclesiastes 3:1). Moving outside His timing invites trouble.

• Dependence, not independence: “Trust in the LORD with all your heart…in all your ways acknowledge Him, and He will make your paths straight.” (Proverbs 3:5-6)

• The danger of doing what seems right: Judges ends with the sober refrain, “In those days there was no king in Israel; everyone did what was right in his own eyes.” (Judges 21:25)

• Spiritual vigilance: “Be very careful how you live—not as unwise but as wise, making the most of every opportunity…understand what the Lord’s will is.” (Ephesians 5:15-17)

Confirming Scriptures

Psalm 37:23 — “The steps of a man are ordered by the LORD…”

Isaiah 30:21 — “Your ears will hear this command behind you: ‘This is the way. Walk in it.’”

James 4:13-15 — We plan, but must say, “If the Lord wills, we will live and do this or that.”

Application for Today

• Pause before major moves; invite God’s counsel through Scripture and prayer.

• Weigh timing: Is it God’s “now,” or merely my impatience?

• Seek godly counsel; the Levite ignored the sound advice of his host.

• Evaluate motives: convenience, comfort, or clear obedience?

• Stay sensitive to the Spirit; align every plan with the revealed will of God to avoid needless heartache.
