How does this verse encourage us to value humility in our communities?

Setting the Scene

The Corinthian church prided itself on wisdom, status, and giftedness. Paul reminds them that God’s work unfolds on completely different terms, exposing the emptiness of self-promotion and spotlighting the worth of humility.

What the Verse Says

“He chose the lowly and despised things of the world, and the things that are not, to nullify the things that are.” — 1 Corinthians 1:28

Why God Chooses the Lowly

• To overturn human boasting (v. 29)

• To magnify His own power rather than ours (v. 24)

• To demonstrate that worth comes from divine choice, not social ranking

• To fulfill the pattern seen throughout Scripture:

– Moses, a fugitive shepherd, becomes Israel’s deliverer (Exodus 3)

– David, the youngest son, is anointed king (1 Samuel 16)

– Mary, an unknown girl, becomes the mother of the Messiah (Luke 1)

Humility’s Impact on Community Life

• Levels status barriers, allowing every believer to contribute freely

• Protects relationships from rivalry and resentment

• Opens ears to correction and instruction (Proverbs 13:10)

• Positions the church to showcase God’s grace instead of personal achievement

• Creates space for diverse gifts to flourish without competition (Romans 12:3-8)

Practical Steps Toward Humility

• Celebrate unseen service: thank nursery workers, setup crews, prayer teams.

• Speak well of others more than of self (Proverbs 27:2).

• Ask rather than assume: “How can I support you?”

• Embrace tasks below your comfort zone; Jesus washed feet (John 13:14-15).

• Regularly acknowledge dependence on God in conversation, not just in private.

• When praised, redirect credit to the Lord and to team members.

• Memorize 1 Corinthians 1:28-29; recite it when tempted to self-exalt.
